How should I quit my job?

Right now I'm on a 7 week loa, and I've decided I don't want to go back to work. Me and my boss don't have a greatest relationship, so I want to leave in a way that doesn't further tarnish my reputation. Should I go back and put in 2 weeks notice, or just go in and tell him I won't be returning. Thanks in advance.

I would call him and explain that you are leaving to pursue school full time.

Sure it's a lie, but he doesn't need to know that.

I'd then ask him if he wants you to come back and serve out your two weeks or since you've already been out for so long should you not come back.

This way you're not leaving him in the lurch, you've covered your bases, and your excuse saves face for everyone.

If you are on FMLA or receiving any benefits, you should definitely go in and give two weeks' notice. It's the right thing to do anyway. But even more importantly -- if you do not return to work, you can be required to pay back any benefits you have received while on LOA. For example, if the employer is paying a portion of your health insurance, you would owe that money to the employer if you do not return.

Put your resignation in writing, and it's always good to say that you learned a lot from the experience and wish your boss only the best. It's true -- you learned exactly the type of person you do not want to work for.

Well if you want to use your job as a reference for a new job then you should tell your boss that your quitting and finish out your schedule for that one or two weeks. You will gain some respect from your boss and he probably not trash you if your new boss calls him to see how good of a worker you are. Hopefully your boss isn't a complete dick.

Give your 2 week notice and make sure you have another job lined up or enough money put away to cover your living till you find one. Your 2 weeks notice will show that you respect your boss enough to give him/her time to arrange a schedule without screwing anyone over.

Two weeks notice, all the way.

This saves your reputation and doesn't make you look like an ***.

I hope you find a better job!

    Definitely the two week notice.

2 weeks notice is more respectful than just saying "hey, I'm not working here anymore, peace". Not that you would say that exactly but you get my gist.

  • if you've been gone for seven weeks i'm sure that if you tell him your not returning it wont be met with negativity from your boss, its probably expected

Do the "You can't fire me! I quit!" thing. It's a classic.
