That is very normal at this stage. She is learning what words she 'expects' to be there....a sign of a good reader. Help by reading to her, with her following along. I used to read one side of the page and have my daughter read the other, it helped her learn how it should sound and I was there to help with some of the words she was having difficultly with. In first grade they will really work on sounding out and you will be amazed at the difference from the beginning of the year and the end. My daughter is finishing up third grade and is reading at a 5 -6 grade level according to her teacher.

Just don't push her to learn, keep it fun, or she will pull away from it. I started to make her read harder chapter books in 2nd grade because of her ability and she started hating to read. I backed off, let her reading be her choice and now she reads the hard stuff and enjoys it.

Lots of kids like to guess words instead of sounding them out. I would spend some time each day reading to her and having her read to you. If she guesses a word, kindly tell her that's not right and sound it out with her. This way, she will get in the habit of sounding things out and will see how that helps her to read things better. It's ok for children to guess at words, most children do it, but you also need to be there to correct her and help her determine the right word.

My 5 year old increased her reading skills by leaps and bounds after using the Starfall website. It's phonic based, but loads of fun and appropriate for those just learning their alphabet all the way up to second-third grade readers. Best of all, it's FREE!
