Originals are usually better.
As long as a cover is done well, I have no problem with them.

It depends. For example, Joan Jett's cover of The Doors' Love Me Two Times was good. But when Glee covered Queen, it wasn't good. So yeah, and most of the times the originals are better. But, I think The Doors' cover of Alabama Song (Whiskey Bar) is better than the original.

It really depends on the original artist, the cover artist, and the song.
Edit: I agree, Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt" IS better. It has more depth.

Only when a band adds their own flare to the song. For example, Michael Franti's cover of California Uber Alles is quite good, and Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt is fantastic. I think my feelings are well described by this infographic:

Not particulary fond of covers, however, once every so often we are treated to something that is truly better than the original... But very rarely!
I sure do like Johnny's "Hurt", but without the video to accompany it, it's pretty meaningless...

originals are better almost all the time but here is a cover of Tommy James and The Shondells.." Crimson & Clover which IMO was an exception, by Joan Jett and The Blackhearts.

Usually the originals are better but there are a few exceptions such as antisocial by anthrax and the green manalishi by judas priest. Both are better than the original I think

If it's a carbon copy it's not much good.
Jimi Hendrix's version of Bob Dylan's All Along The Watchtower is a great cover version.

I like covers some times because they add their own thing, but the orginial is sometimes best. It also depends on the way they sing or play an instrument....
