OK NEED HELP NOW NEED ADVICE!!!?
Ok, well, the barn owner is mad at me and she called the owner of the horses. Let me tell you what happened! Ok. The owner of the 2 horses gave me permission to groom and ride her horses because she is never over there. So I did that for about 4 months and then out of the blue I came over to the barn the next day and their tack room was locked up! So I called and asked her why and she said "things were missing and she didn't want her saddles stolen." So I said ok and stopped working on her horses daily because I didn't have their supplies to groom and ride. So I was over at the barn yesterday and her horses were covered in poop and mud (because the field they are in is a mud hole.) And another horse owner was over there and we were talking about how neglected these horses are and you literally couldn't see their real color they were so covered in poop. So we decided that was it. (I'm 13 and she is about 28) We went and got the horses and I immediately started bathing them. After 4 hours, I got both of them clean. I then started on their mane and tails. Horse #1 is white and her mane was completely matted and her tail was almost dragging the ground and it was covered in urine and poop and mud and disgusting! So I put on my gloves and grabbed some shampoo and started scrubbing and cleaning! FLINALLY! I got a little bit of poop out! Then I put vinegar on it (to really clean it and make it white) And sfter I soaked it in the watered-down vinegar I washed it with mane and tail again. I tried brushing it out, even pulling little strands of hair! And I realized I couldn't get it! So the 28 year old who was with me cut it herself. THEN I moved to the mane. It was matted! There was one part of it that I had to cut out because it was literally matted together! So I brushed through her mane and then waited for her to dry and then I braided it to keep it from tangling again! So then I moved to horse #2. She was so dirty! After I bathed her, I moved to her tail. It was dragging the ground about 4 inches and it stunk with urine and poop! I got my gloves back on and tried brughing through it, and again, I couldn't even pull out tiny strands. I cut about a foot off of the tail and I finally got it brushed out! I then washed it to get the urine smell out! Her mane wasn't THAT bad so I tried to resist cutting and I finally got it brushed through! So I was so exausted and went home after 6 hours at the barn! It was 11pm! So today, I'm sitting in my house, and the barn owner comes knocking at my door and she is all upset over the tails and she stated "They were sooo pretty with their long tails!" And I apologized and just sat there and took the blame. My mom wasn't home but my brother (He's 19) was there and he kinda kept me from breaking down in tears! Well, I then told her the reason I did it and she said that she was going to call the owner and tell her and see what she wants to do about it. So after just about getting me in tears she says, "I want to talk to your mother, where is your mother?!!?" And I said she isn't here and then she left her number and told me to tell my mom to call her when she gets home. So I told my mom, who already knew that I was cutting the manes and tails and she was like "I know it was all out of love, you didn't want those horses in that bad of a situation, I guess I'll call her after dinner." So she called her and my mom was just like, yes, I understand completely. Is there anything we can do to make this situation better? And the owner said no. Then the barn owner said she was gonna call the horse owner and tell her what I did. And then my mom said, well, it's getting late and I will have her (that's me) call her tomorrow night. So I have to call her tomorrow night. I have prayed that the horse owner will be understanding and forgiving but I just feel bad because I did this to help these poor horses. Did I mention the barn owner is about 80 and also that I live across the street from the barn? ALSO the horses owner hasn't been over at the barn in a year and a half. She also mails her payment check to the barn owner. Well I think this situation has been taken out of hand but I feel bad because everyone got so upset. I did a good thing. AND on horse #1, the halter was on so tight it had rubbed the hair off and then started rubbing off the skin. So I took one of my big halters and put on her.
And I HAVE learned a lesson here. So if I ever get in this kind of situation again I need to take pictures and call a humane society?
ann - I live in the south. It was 68 degrees and there is a water heater. I'm not stupid.

OK. First of all...never stop being a caring person. Ever.
No matter if you come across jerks like the barn owner. Because that's what that loser is...a jerk. She clearly doesn't care about anything but that check in the mail. She ought to be ashamed of herself!
Second of all....your mom should speak with the horse owner directly. This is very important. Because your mom can tell the owner the exact situation....how the horses are in filth and how you lovingly cared for them. <---if the owner doesn't know how filthy it is....you should get this person's email and send her a picture. She may be one of those clueless people who trusts the barn owner to be a good caring person.
Also...if the horse owner has any heart at all...she'll thank you and send you a check for all your hard work.
You should not feel bad or ashamed or feel that you did anything wrong.
The world isn't a perfect place, if it was, you would be congratulated by everyone who knew about your good deed. But since it's not,....it's got jerks in it and horses are nothing more than objects to some people......awesome people like you get in trouble for caring.
Yes, the horses didn't belong to you, but so the heck what? They were in need and you lent your time and effort and got them cleaned up. You should be very proud of yourself.
If you still want to handle the horses, I would suggest writing up a contract with the horse owner about what is expected....and getting a key made for you, for the tack room. Your mom can be there with you when you lock up to be sure that everything is in order so that the barn owner can't say you took anything.
As for the halter....I'd take it off. The horses should not have halters on at all. They can get caught in the fence.
Anyhow......Adults can be real sh!theads. That's the sad part of life. Sorry you had to go through all that to find out the hard way.
But like I said....don't change how you are and who you are....a good hearted kind wonderful person!

Well, I totally agree with you :) The owner of the horses gave you permission to GROOM them. And grooming may require cutting poop out of their tail. But, if she really liked them with the long hair then give her a baggie with the poopy hair in it and that's what she gets. As for the halter, the hair probably hasn't grown back where it was rubbed off so you should tell your mom and see if she thinks its bad enough to call someone. If the horse owner gave you permission then the BARN ower really shouldn't be yelling at you. Because the horse owner is like 80 and she can't really take care of them. She shouldn't have them. Hope I helped. If the barn owner sews just say that s dosent own the horses...SO BACK OFF. Plus you might not want you you over there anymore. I still think you did right thing. Plus I'm 13 too :) How did the horse owner call go? Old people can be pretty understanding :)

If you think you did was right, then was is to worry? Its obvious that you couldn't get the horse's mane and tail all de-tangled. Just tell the barn owner this, "Okay, the horses' tails were all snarled up and it was impossible to let it stay that way so what should I do? Let it get worse or fix it?" And tell her that YOU COULDN'T fix the mane and tail! Stand up and be strong. I'm pretty sure since the owner lets you ride the horses and take care of them that she would understand. Just state you are taking care of the horses, you had permission, you take care of those horses. If you need to cut some hair off a horse from getting it worse, then DO IT! Just state it like that, but in a mature way, you don't want to start crying and being all bratty, it would just show that your immature (which isn't good in situations like that).
And to tell you the truth, if the owner of the horse and the barn didn't like the trails/manes that short then just use M-T-G (which is a shampoo that helps grow manes and tails out, ETC.) and grow it out. I'm sure she doesn't show, so there really shouldn't be a problem. A tail is a tail, it will grow out and so does the mane.
In a kind way, tell the barn owner to shut up, and it isn't the end of the world because of you taking care of a horse. Just say it straight and black and white like that. Hopefully the message will get through to her and she'll leave you alone. And possibly the horses' owner will come to your defense. And if she doesn't then just say, "You said I could take care of your horse, and if cutting parts of a tail so it doesn't get madded isn't taking care of a horse for you then what is?"
Just be strong and show that you are mature and responsible.
Good luck!

I think everyone here feels about the same way as everyone else...with that being said, I understand you had only the best intentions, but where you should have stopped was prior to getting the scissors. I would be very unhappy if anyone cut my horses mane or tail without checking with me (but I would never let my horses get in that condition to begin with) The other thing is I am not a fan of turning a horse out with a halter on, and one that doesn't fit, is just unacceptable. Just talk to the owner, hopefully she will understand you were just trying to help. Good luck!!

Even though your heart was in the right place, what you did was wrong. Grooming and bathing the horses was fine, but you had no business cutting the tail without permission from the owner. They aren't your horses, so you can't just do stuff like that. You should have asked the owner or at least the barn owner first. If they ignored you, you could have called the police or animal control and reported neglect. Covered in mud, poop, urine, and in a too tight halter is neglect, and the authorities would have taken care of it
Hopefully the owner won't be too mad. Just tell them that you did it because it had to be done. The horses were uncomfortable and were being neglected. You should apologize for being out of line. Also tell them that if it gets to that point again, you will call the authorities.

young lady, you need to mind your own business. i have a gray horse. his mane gets tangled easier then bay horses. i groomed him yesterday and after the rain he was a mess. healthy but his mane was a mess. the dirt stands out more on him. if you ever cut my horses tail or mane i would be really mad too and i would make your mother pay for your mistake. next time you encounter something that seems like animal cruelty you better get your facts straight. before you go washing any ones Else's horses in the winter you better think first. you can kill them. maybe that's why they had dirt on them and looked grungy.
you sound very young and i am sure your heart was in the right place. they are not your horses and its none of your business honestly. you said nothing about there weight or hooves. until you contact an experienced adult dint bother the aspca with nonsence. they have more to tend to then a horse with mud on it. i hope you learned a lesson. also, never ever ever give other peoples horses treats. ever. you can kill a horse. i think you need some classroom work before you ever enter a barn again.

i can understand that you did it out of love, but if someone went and started cutting my horses mane and tail i would be angry to. Although, i thoroughly groom my horse everyday so no one would need to do it. Anyway i wouldn't worry about it, if the owner can't be bothered to even go and see them then why would she be bothered if you cleaned the horses, i mean thats what you were supposed to do isn't it. you used to help on with them. just explain that you couldn't leave them like that. and if she gets all B***** then just explain that if you ever see them like that again that you wont help HER out you will help the horses out by calling a horse rescue and see how she likes being fined for neglect ! because tbh even though you were really helping the horse, you were helping the owner to. x

You Should have taken pictures of her horses before & after.
I would apologize & leave her horses alone & next time just call the humane Society to come look at her horses after they get like that! Go take pictues of where the halter was too tight & the skin rubbed off.You shouldn't have Cut their manes & tails because they are not your horses.
You was just trying to help out i understand that but you should have asked or left it!
Yes Everything you descirbed is Neglect of her horses Next time let the Humane sociaty handle it.
If she cannot care for her horses she does not need them so next time take pictures which you still can i would go there Take pictures of where you cleaned them up & take pictures of the horse with the Too tight halter make sure it shows where she was rubbed by the halter & Take pictures of their feild where they are kept.Just incase you need In later on!'
By the Way Good Luck! Some people can go overboard!
Too me it sounds like she does not deserve horses at all she should apprecatie your help!

Is it a self-care boarding place or a full-care boarding place?
Also, the second the tack room was locked, you should've called the owner to say, "Hey, I can't get any of the horses' stuff to groom them."
When they got gross, you should've called the owner to tell them, "So the horses' manes and tails are really bad because I haven't been able to groom them...they're so bad they might need to be cut, so is that okay?"
Also, a barn that has pasture conditions which are SO bad that a horse gets that disgusting and begins getting an embedded halter is a really poorly-run facility.

Wow, sweetheart, you have learned a valuable lesson here.
I got really into your story when you talked about giving them a bath without the owner's permission, but when you cut sections of the mane and tail, I went...uh oh. You have now gone way too far.
Regardless of how well meaning you were, this is a no no and you are now seeing the repercussions.
All I can say is learn to untangle manes and tails without a scissors. It is not all that hard to do.
You take your fingers after putting on detangler and after the tails are washed (even if you have to soak them in a bucket, and pull out a few strands at a time. I am sure people who show horses may have other methods, but if ours tangle in the pastures, I just work on them a half dozen strands at a time. Then you can braid up the excess and get it off of the ground.
I think your mom deserves a big hug for helping you out in this one and handling it the right way.
