Am I the only one bothered when someone refers to their favorite team as "my" team?

It all goes to the human need to "belong" to something. Doesn't bug me, though I try not to do it. Have been guilty a few times. Way I figure, if you invest time, energy, and money, it's OK to say we. You are part of the fan base.

If I remember right, there was a morning sports guy that hated that as well. Tony Bruno maybe? Steve Czaban? Can't remember which one.

I don't mind it too much. Obviously, every person that utters "my team" isn't actually in their employ, but it saves having to constantly say "my favorite team". Saving the breath it takes to say one word could add years to your life, who knows?

  • Yep. It's a lot easier to say "my team" than "the team I root for" or "the team for which I root". It's pretty obvious that you don't own the team.

I do dislike when people say "we"/"us", but I guess it's born of a desire to belong to something. So I usually say "our boys" when referring to the team.

No. I use it myself, and I have no qualms. The Rangers are MY team. "My" doesn't necessarily signify ownership. My house, my Dad, my school, my teacher, my friend. I don't own any of those. "My" can simply refer to a belonging or a relationship, and I belong to an army of millions of fans who bleed Ranger blue. Therefore, the Rangers are MY team.

Not really because it'll save me hearing the sentence, "Oh, and that's also my favourite team." When I hear, "my team," I immediately associate that with the person's favourite.
