How do I create a partition on my hard drive?

Okay, for question number 2, how do I create a partition for saving backup data on the HD I'm currently running windows on? I am going to have to reinstall windows 7 in order to upgrade from a 32bit version to a 64bit version. I have only one HD it is 1TB and I've used up about 200GB I would like to backup this 200GB of data on to the hard drive I am going to have to reinstall window on. Is there anyway to create separatete partition and do this or will I have to buy another hard drive

    Start -> Run -> diskmgmt.msc

Right click on any unallocated space, and select "new simple volume", procede through the setup to create a new partition. Then move your files over, reinstall Windows on the original partition, and move files back, then you can delete the partition you created.

    Windowsskey+R

    diskmgmt.msc

Right Click OS C and choose Shrink

Shrink to how much You want the partition to be

It will show up as Unnalocated space or the name you put it

Right Click Format on your new partition

Choose the NTFS File system, You can also do this in the Windows Installation CD as it asks you to create partitions before you install

I am not 100% sure, but I believe if you want to make partitions, you have to do it when you are originally formatting the drive.

You can make as many partitions as you want, but to my knowledge, it all has to be done before you install anything on it.

So basically once you install windows, you can't go back and say "I have 800GB free, maybe I should make some of it a partition."

Basically what I have started doing is upon getting a new HDD, I partition out maybe 20-30GB as my "windows drive," and then use the rest as my storage/games/whatever. Normally when you get viruses and other things to completely screw over your system, they attack your windows files. So it is nice to be able to wipe the windows partition, and still have all of your files left over. Now they might be infected or whatever, but its a temporary safeguard against a sudden system failure due to some virus/error/problem.

Rebooting your computer only to get an error saying windows can't load, its really annoying, lol. Preparing for a format isn't bad, being forced to do it, sucks.

You can shrink the partition you currently have and then format the unallocated space.

Copy your files over to it, then reinstall on the original partition.

    Start

Type " computer management" in the search box

click " Disk management" in the left column

right click your drive and select shrink volume.

    follow instructions
