By modern definition, Michelangelo, called "God's Sculptor" by the Vatican, is burning in Hell for eternity?

In what some call a 'death bed confession', Michelangelo confessed to writer Giorgio Vasari while penning his autobiography, that he only loved one person in his lifetime, that person was Cecchino dei Bracci. Keeping in mind that even admitting a homosexual love in the 1500's could be reason for execution, there are other more recent proofs that would make one conclude he was in fact homosexual. Dozens of sonnets, and poems, professing Michelangelo's love for this man, and outlining their intimate love making, have been found.

So is it just that the man solely responsible for such works that inspired the faith of millions, and brought them closer to God, be burning in Hell for eternity because he was gay. Is there some hierarchy of sin and penance that exempts him from this. He did devote his life to the church, and created some of it's most cherished and influential works of history.

The Vatican could not have avoided knowing of Michelangelo's homosexuality. for this reason it is improbable to consider that the tributary title, if ever it is true it was truly issued by the Vatican - would have been done without counting on moral repercussions. This only proves that the Church has been consistent all along - homosexuality is sin but the homosexual person need not be considered nor condemned a sinner. There could be various reasons why the Church does not steer itself clear from this great artist.

    1. His creations of such great beauty - Art being seen as a participation of God's own glory - could not have come from a man so deprived morally. Nothing comes from nothing. Although rumors of his sexual deviancy were rampant, even scholars of today could not say with certainty he led a debauched gay life. He may have had male lovers but, as his sonnets attests, he was more a man in pursuit of real love among men, rather than a sexual pervert simply trying to get as much physical pleasure from gay sex.

    2. His love for Tommaso dei Cavalieri ( it was not really Cecchino dei Bracci who was his greatest love) bordered on the ideal. In fact, scholars agree he became more enamored of "Tomai" despite his constant rejection of physical consummation. Perhaps this was deemed more important by the Vatican. Cognizant of Paul's lofty treatise on the primacy of charity (love), the Vatican may - in continuing to celebrate him - be implying that even a homosexual can truly love and that the love even in a homosexual may be the main instrument for judging their morality. We must take note that the Old Testament also records a similar case - the love story between Jonathan and David - patently homosexual yet devoid of physical self-seeking.

    3. Instead of insinuating that the Catholic Church has a double standard in judging the morality of homosexuals, perhaps we should see in the case of Michelangelo the real face of Mother Church- strict and unequivocating when it comes to moral behavior, but soft and understanding when dealing with individual sinful members. This would even explain why, despite the uproar, pedophile priests are not just kicked out when found to have molested altar boys. Any Mother would stand by their most reproachful offsprings.

Bigoted approach to the Will of the Gods. I still find it difficult to understand that people can be so narrow minded as to think that the Gods frown on homosexuality. It's fine. This is such a basic human emotion, and if you fall in love with someone - congratulations... and it doesn't matter if it's a man or a woman.

He certainly isn't rotting in Hell. Of that I can assure you. No homosexuals are / will be specifically for that trait. Also, Hell doesn't exist yet... judgement day has arrived, so now's the time to make sure your heart is pure.

Scarce had I seen for the first time his eyes,

Which to your living eyes were life and light,

When, closed at last in death's injurious night,

He opened then on God in Paradise.

God would punish a man that wrote f*cking poems about him.

    What a jerk.

There are multiple places in the Bible that state that anyone that is homosexual, adulterers,.... go to hell.

    Read 1 Corinthians 6:1-20

How do you know He didn't repent on his deathbed? Only God knows whether he's in Hell or Heaven. It's not up to us to decide Michelangelo's fate!
