I keep practising, but can't build muscles...?

What I do currently and have been doing for the past 4 weeks now (at least 5 days a week):

* 5 sets of 15 push ups during the day

* stretching rope exercise (5 sets of 20)

* 5 sets of 20 tricep dips

* 5 sets of 3 pull ups on a pull-up bar

I don't have dumbells at home, so can't really do them. Are they absolutely necessary to build muscles? Is there anything wrong with what I am doing currently?

Why doesn't it work / What should I change or improve on?

Thanks

Update:

Thanks Jason, but I just don't have time for gym to be honest. I work 5 days a week and study the other 2. And I can't imagine going to gym before/after work as my work is quite heavy, i.e. won't be able to do it all physically in a day.

    Yes, free-weights are the absolute minimum, but you really should get a gym membership.

    Even if that regime you're on at the moment did work, you'd end up looking weird because you're only training some muscles, i.e your back isn't being worked at all so your front would end up looking bigger or more toned than your back. It's important to train your lower body too, even if it's only the upper body you're trying to build.

    But, thee most important thing, by far, is your diet. Even if someone took steroids, they wouldn't be able to gain if they're not eating properly. Work out your BMR, add 10%, keep an eye on it and adjust it a necessary. Your total daily calories should consist of something like 40-50% carbs, 30-40% protein and 20% fat. Stay away from saturated fat, try to avoid polyunsaturated fats. monounsaturated fats are ideally the ones you should be eating.

    If you're not taking in enough protein you wont be able to rebuild muscle at all, since protein is the building blocks of muscle. Protein is most essential during the first 30 mins after your workout, that's when you're body will look for nutrition most, a mix of protien and carbs is good at that point. If you're not eating enough carbs, your body will look to protein for it's energy. Eat too much carbs and it converts to fat. Avoid complex carbs like the ones found in sugars and starchy foods, simple carbs are the way to go. There's FAR TOO MUCH more to cover than that you'd be better just using google to find the info yourself. There's millions of articles out there that will help you.

    Bottom line.... you're probably not gaining because you're not eating enough.

    Hope that helps a little.
