The same reason that myth about women having higher endurance for pain persists, even after researchers in the U.K. proved it's the opposite.
Even people raised in the most feminist households are taught from birth that men are stronger, and even if they aren't taught it, they learn it from society or observe it around them. They also see men holding higher positions of authority, and being more authoritative than women in general. Most of us don't have to be told men are superior. It's just obvious as we grow up. Somewhere along the line, we're taught that that's "bad" thinking, that men and women are equal, and this belief is hammered into our psyche so much that we begin to take it as the most sacred belief our society has; to go against it is to sacrilegious, the biggest sin a member of our society can commit. This is hammered into us so well that we actually ignore our own common sense and perceptions of the world to accommodate this belief.
Thus, it's only natural that people take beliefs like the one about women's life spans seriously. They have to. It's the only way they can reconcile this obvious discrepancy between what they observe and what society has taught them to think. And the feminists have done a good job of this. They tend to promote women's imagined advantages as traits which are less obvious, but which they wrongly claim are scientifically proven--traits like the higher endurance for pain and longer life span. These aren't things the average person is going to see around them, but they will notice men's superior strength easily. The feminists claim that they have scientific evidence backing these more subtle traits, but in reality, science obviously says the opposite. To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if men do have a naturally genetic longer life span, just because we tend to outperform women in all other fields--an example is what I pointed out above, that it turned out we were the ones with the higher endurance for pain, and not women.
As an added bonus, I'll point out one of the biggest ironies: that the feminists who promote this sort of "ignore what you see or die" mentality are often the ones to criticize religious people and call them backwards for exactly the same thing.

In past ages men tend to smoke and drink alcohol a lot more than women, obviously these substances weaken the body slowly but surely. Also most women in the past were housewives, so they were less exposed to traffic and laboral accidents. As more and more women work outside home now, the number of female deaths in accidents have increased as well. Also as they now consume more alcohol and tobacco than past generations, you can see lots more of females with pulmonary and liver cancer. These data is statistical and of course there are exceptions, but it shows the increase on female deaths is real.
It's also important to note that scientifics have found a relation between increased muscular mass and weaker immune system. Men tend to have more muscular mass, but this also applies to women. So if you wanna live longer don't get too muscular!!

Lol.. You just got pwned by the guy above me. Japan is one of the most developed countries in the world and even there, women live much longer than men, this effect is true even when accounting for men dying in war, etc.

"in Scandinavian countries they live to the same age"
False
Finland men 76.1 women 82.4
Denmark men 76.0 women 80.6
Sweden men 78.7 women 83.0
Norway men 77.8 women 82.5
"in third world countries women life span is much shorter than men"
Mostly because of high rate of maternal death.
"in the west men life span is shorter than women"
Mostly because men lead *****y lifestyles and women are told to take care of their health(which in most cases they do), while men are not told the same thing.
But I agree with you that it's not genetic, sure men and women are prone to different disease, but I've real multiple studies stating that when all outer factors are controlled men and women live equally which means that if men and women in the West were to live similar lifestyles and were to take care of their health equally - they would live about the same.

There are other factors in third world countries which are much better controlled in the West (curable diseases, lack of basic healthcare, etc.)

Here is a list of reasons which may explain why women live longer.

Double standards.
Men are responsible for their workplace inequalities (men are 10x more likely to die in the workplace than women)
But women are not (even though wage gaps are largely a myth in the west)
Such double standards are why the British Empire did not think itself savage

If all you hear is how women live longer than men,you tend to believe it without questioning it.

No women live longer because retirement homes need dishwashers too.
