Why do dogs often go up to another and?

smell there behinds so much? I can sort of understand why many cattle do it to see if they are in heat or not but dogs will sniff away. They will check both female and males do this to each other. Is there some kind of odor that is emanated?

Its normal is how dogs find out information on one another - age gender health, coming into season etc.

By smelling there they can tell many things about the other dog. For instance they can tell if the other dog is in heat, what that dog eats, etc.

in humans, the dog "butt-sniffing" ritual would be equivalent to running a full criminal background check, credit report, and medical exam.
