Is Facebook getting out of hand?

Knowing all the social networking things that are going around us, is there a good possibility that it is already getting out of hand?

I suppose it depends on what you mean by out of hand. Its usage is widespread, sure. People are addicted to it, but their number isn't overwhelming. If you're asking if it's an epidemic with widespread negative socioeconomic effects, I'd say no.

People said that about the internet in general when it became popular. And then Friendster. And then Myspace. Even AOL for god's sake. It's not a real issue, despite what monomaniacal news organizations may expound in their headlines and "news" alerts to garner interest. I say don't worry about it.

Yeah, someone ought to put those upstarts in their place. Ya know they just bought a huge mega complex for all their employees. I thinking why they need all those people and all that space? What are they doing? Redesigning the "like" button? What the heck is Facebook? It's air. It's nothing.

    define out of hand

you can use it as little or as much as you want

and @ clumsy: they actually worked on developing their own code language, they serve millions of photos a second, so scaling a system to that size has it's problems, and they have to constantly figure out how to grow even larger. There are more complaints about how slow it is than how great it is, so they're always working on improving their code. More info http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAzeJTgFwDc
