Camera fry danger with Vivatar 283 flash?
I recently acquired a Canon XTi dSLR camera. I'm relatively new to digital photography, but I've spent many years using high end film SLRs. My question is can I use a Vivatar 283 flash as a TTL device triggered from the camera's hot shoe without potentially causing any damage to the camera? The Canon Speedlites are rather pricey & if possible I'd like to use my trusty old Vivatar unit, but certainly don't want to risk frying the camera. Any thoughts or advice?

Put scrambled eggs in so that it will fry the eggs instead of the camera.

It is possible depending on the trigger voltage compatibility. Check the website below. It may help. If not you would have to check the specs for your camera's shoe voltage and that required by the Vivatar 283 flash unit.

As seen at http://www.botzilla.com/photo/strobeVolts.html the values are very variable. Some samples are not a problem, and some are very risky. The XTi is pretty old in digital camera years, so maybe it is worth gambling.
