My computer says my flash drive needs to be formatted, but it will destroy my files. What to do?

I have very important stuff on this flash drive (and i know i should have another one, but this was my backup file to another flash drive - which is now dead - and i haven't gotten around to get another). I've tried to copy the files onto my computer, but it's not bringing up the files, its just saying it needs to be formatted. is there anything i can do without purchasing a software or anything? Plz help!

Try different USB Ports on the computer, namely trying to rear ones. Try a different computer. Make sure the pins in the USB drive are not damaged. Does the device appear in My Computer? Go to Computer > Properties > Device Manager. Does the computer recognize the device as a USB Mass Storage?

Run an antivirus scan on your thumb drive. Hope it works.

    Thanks.
