Toddler hair care issues?

My 2 year old daughter hates to have her hair washed. She loves bath time but will scream and cry when we have to put water on her head. It isn't an issue with getting water in her eyes, it is just getting water on her head.

The last time we tried to shampoo her hair, she cried and screamed so much she made herself sick and threw up.

We think she may have had a bad experience at a party when someone threw water on her head and since then she doesn't like water to be poured on her head.

Has anyone else had a toddler who doesn't like to get their hair wet/water on their heads?

Any good tips from the experienced moms out there?

My daughter used to hate having her hair washed too. She would scream and cry and pitch a fit because she hates water in her face. What I did was put the water into a squirt bottle and wet it that way. It was a little more time consuming but it got her used to the fact that water wasn't going to hurt her. As time progressed, I used a cup to wet it when she'd tip her head back. And now she lies in the water and wets her hair all by herself. For me, it was just taking baby steps to get her more comfortable with what was happening to her. As far as shampoo goes, I use Johnson's curly hair baby shampoo. It goes without saying that Johnson's is gentle on the eyes and won't hurt her. You could even squirt the shampoo in to her hands and let her rub it in her hair herself. Make her think that she is a big girl, washing her hair all by herself. I'm sure after a few weeks things will have improved.

My 2 year old nephew had a traumatic experience in the tub; The person babysitting let him play with the regular soap/shampoo (the grownup stuff) and he got it in his eyes.

After that he started freaking it out when it was time to get his hair washed.

My brother in law had the genius idea of taking a shower with him. We thought "That will never work! It's water pouring on his head the whole time!" Well we were wrong because my nephew loved it. I guess he doesn't realize that it's the same thing as having a bath. But whatever! He loves it! LOL

My daughter also hated washing her hair. She cried and fought everytime but I couldn't figure out any reason. I did notice that she picked her ear after - so I asked her if the water bugged her and she said yes. Now I get her to plug her ears and only put enough water in so that when she lays back it comes just ear level. I wash and rinse with her laying back in the tub and now the only time she complains is when the water is a bit too high and starts to come up on her face.
