Need some electrical advise.?
Was just informed that "woodland creatures" (my words) have had the pleasure of chewing up several electrical wires- mostly discovered in a crawl space under a winterized cottage that I own
Local "experts" rather strongly suggest that I should have the wires replaced which they are graciously willing to do for an estimated cost somewhere between $3000 and one billion dollars (I may be exaggerating).
But the point is... why not me! What about a little self-sufficiency! After all our founding fathers certainly had to be resourceful! Even going back to our distant past, I'm sure our cavemen ancestors had to replace their own electrical wires!
I've read a few schematics, replaced flashlight batteries, operated a generator, articulated Bells Theorem and been "wired" more than once!
So the question is, how difficult can this be?

Not too difficult if you know what you are doing. Since you ask here, you need experience. Install junction boxes and run MC type cable to replace the damaged cables. This will prevent a repeat of the damage. Use good electrical practice and get the work inspected. From the money you were quoted, I suspect about 4 man days work for experienced help, and about 500 feet of cable. If in doubt at all, contact a qualified professional electrician to do the work. That is probably faster and cheaper than your local "experts".

Yes, you can do it. Check local electrical code to see if you are allowed to do it or if it requires a licensed professional. Also check on if you are required to get a permit and inspection by the town, county etc.
The one part that may require a professional is when the wires run from the crawl space up into a wall. The wires are no doubt fastened to the wall stud and can't be easily pulled out. Whatever you do, please study up on electrical wiring so you don't burn the place down. Also, make sure you have all of the power shut off for the place before cutting into it.
$3000 sounds like it may be a fairly elaborate job.

Depends on the wiring. Sometimes it can be very difficult, and sometimes a piece of cake. The main problem is knowing your local codes because if you do something wrong, you could end up paying triple the amount you thought you were "saving" by doing it yourself and wasting all your time and effort. Not only that, but if you get the wrong gauge wire, don't understand the amperage, not ground it correctly, etc. You could burn the entire house down. Without knowing what kind of electrical work you are describing, my suggestion is to get several bids from different electricians and leave it to the pros.

Make sure your life insurance is paid up. Trained professionals have lots of training and tools to determine if a circuit is live. Touching your fingers to a live circuit can cause death!!!!.
Get a book on electricity and a good meter. Then - Good Luck

Forget the local experts and hire an electrician to give you a price. Electrical fires can get very expensive.

Well if you think the price is way out of line now, just think what it will be when you have to hire someone to come in and fix your fixing. As far as difficulty, this is not a difficult job for some one that knows how to do it correctly, for someone with no experience it will quickly get to be extremely difficult.

Yorga lived in CAVE #53 and one day he discovered that some woodland creatures (about the size of an M1A1-Tank) had been messing with the wiring under his cave. This was puzzling to Yorga because he didn't own a toaster, a puter, or an electric light (or anything else electrical, for that matter).
So, it wasn't a huge setback and when a friendly contractor, Zog, offered to correct the problem for only 3,500 CLAMS, Yorga replied, "What's a CLAM?"
Yorga had a simple solution: If it ain't causing me much misery in "The Here and Now" I ain't gonna waste 3,500 clams (whatever a clam is). Also, if electrical wiring was so darn valuable, then why did they put it UNDER the cave?
People loved Yorga even though he tended to be CHEAP. If a problem could be solved with a roll of electrical tape and a prayer, then that's the route Yorga would have chosen.
YORGA, YORGA, YORGA, YORGA, YORGA!!!!!!!

If you need to wire an air compressor, then you should take it to a real electrician. You should not try to wire it yourself unless you have proper experience. I hope I helped!

At the very least you should grab your flashlight and crawl under there and do your own inspection of the situation. Take some electrical tape with you.
