Greatest Metal band of the 1990s? PANTERA or DEATH?
In general, most consider the 1990s as the decade that Metal kinda faltered. While there was a fair amount going on over in Europe, in the more Extreme genres of Black and Death Metal, the more visible face of Metal, particularly in the USA, seemed to fade hard after 1993 or so. All of the Big 4 seemed to go into "creative comas", bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest essentially got bogged down and irrelevant for MOST of the Decade, Rob and Bruce both leaving and seemingly dooming their respective bands, etc.
In general, in most regards, those who lived through the decade still can't paint to rosy a picture of it overall (and many have been so shell shocked as to be convinced music has never recovered, when in fact, after about a decade around 2003 or so, IMO Metal really started to breathe new life, but that is another story).
So visibly, in the Mainstream you had Pantera, who go the radio play and attention, and Death , which while never mainstream, was well known, and certainly vital to the continuation and evolution of Metal through the decade.
PANTERA ( 90s discography)
Cowboys from Hell (1990)
Vulgar Display of Power (1992)
Far Beyond Driven (1994)
The Great Southern Trendkill (1996)
vs
DEATH (90s discography)
Spiritual Healing (1990)
Human (1991)
Individual Thought Patterns (1993)
Symbolic (1995)
The Sound of Perseverance (1998)
MQ- Which band do you think was the better, and more important to Metal in the 90s?
MQ2- Which has had the biggest impact and influence on TODAY's Metal scene?
MQ3- What is your favorite album from each band?
MQ4- What are your top 5 tracks from each band?
BQ- Which guitarist do you feel is the greater, Dime or Chuck?
(2 sadly fallen Metal heroes)
@Darth... hmmmm, well, I look at it like this... Iced Earth was very uneven in their discography (then and now (only 2 really good albums in the 90s, IMO) whereas both Death and Pantera were extremely consistent in quality. As for popularity, unfortunately Iced Earth has never come close to Pantera, and as for influence, not in the same ballpark as Death, as Iced Earth is basically "A thrashier" Iron Maiden or Judas Priest.
So If anyone can pick a band with more influence or greater fame from the era, I'm open for it. (any other band I can think of would be in the Black Metal realm, and Death even influenced the birth of that genre)

Dude...
Pantera totalla sucked after Cowboys from Hell...Well, not necessarily sucked but became boring and stale, no emotion, just the musical equivalent of a action movie where everyone has cliched lines and the movie has a predictable plot, even the action scenes aren't that interesting and steals a lot from other movies. Honestly it seems like the band is trying to be tough and becoming parodies of "tough guys." in the process
Death did quite the opposite. They added more Prog elements and became more interesting with each album, and put out some of the greatest albums of the 90's in the process. I think Cowboy's From Hell was decent, but it doesn't even touch Human, Individual Thought Patterns, Symbolic and especially not The Sound of Perseverance. Maybe in the mainstream, Pantera did influence more bands, but the mainstream isn't always the best place for quality, and that's not saying Death wasn't influential as well, since they pioneered the Death Metal genre. I'm sure there are plenty of guitarists out there that don't even play Death Metal that would say Chuck was an influence for them. In a lot of ways Death was way more influential than Pantera.

Pantera?! sure they kept metal alive in the 90s...but that was for the mainstream...when the hell did metal really die?! Never! So if that is taken out of the equation, Death slays Pantera with a Chuck breath...Pantera's Vulgar Display and Great Southern Trendkill (their best albums) are just a little better than Spiritual Healing (Death's weakest of the 90s)..that goes to show how royally Death wins this battle!
Sure they both have different styles...but the quality of music, influence...if u see these things Death is far superior!
Dream Theater would've been a more appropriate choice for a battle with Death..and i dont say it just bcz i like them very much..another very important and influential band of the 90s...Images and Words, Awake, Falling into Infinity (not much of a metal album, but very underrated), Metropolis Pt II..all classic albums!
MA2 : Pantera has influenced all the 'core' bands...Death has inspired almost the rest of the proper metal bands!
MA3 :
Human by Death
The Great Southern Trendkill by Pantera
MA4 :
Why do u ask this question man!? Its not nice! :P
BA : hmm..Chuck...better guitarist...and a much better song writer!

MQ: I listen to them more so I pick Pantera. But Death is just as good. Pantera had more of an impact overall than Death did.
MQ2: Pantera
MQ3: Pantera: Power Metal or Vulgar Display of Power
Death: Individual Thought Patterns
MQ4: Pantera: By Demons Be Driven, Shedding Skin, Down Below, 10's, Hollow
Death: Low Life, Pull The Plug, Destiny, Spiritcrusher, Evil Dead
BQ: Chuck. He was more technical and more precise than Dime. But Dime also rules

It's Difficult to compare both bands but as I see it Pantera has more fame and success than Death but when we talk about who has the most influence to his Genre it has to be Death I mean their contribution to the genre was huge and Pantera's contribution to Heavy Metal wasn't that big as Death but although it was very important at that time.
MA: Death.
MA 2: Death.
MA 3: Death's Human and Pantera's The Great Southern Trendkill
MA 4: Death : Suicide Machine, Evil Dead, Voice of the Soul, Low Life and Pull the Plug.
Pantera : I'm Broken, This Love, Floods, Domination and Walk.
BA- Which guitarist do you feel is the greater, Dime or Chuck?
both are great but Dime is so overrated, My vote goes to Chuck.

My first thought is to assume Pantera, but I haven't honestly listened to enough of Death's material in order to make an educated decision.
MQ - Both were essential to keeping metal alive throughout the nineties, ultimately I think Death made more of a lasting impact with true die-hard metal fans. Pantera is still the better band I think, though.
MQ2 - Pantera definitely has more influence over today's death and liquid metal. They were sort of the pioneers of modern metal, if you will.
MQ3 - Far Beyond Driven for Pantera, Leprosy for Death
MQ4 - Don't have time to fill out lol sorry, have to leave work now
anyway Cemetary Gates is amazing though
I respect Dimebag and Chuck equally as fallen metal legends.

I wouldn't pick either band as the top metal bands of the 90's. When i think 90's i am thinking Scandinavian metal. That's probably where the most revolutionary sounds came out. Before i would think of Pantera and Death, i would sooner look at: Emperor, In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Immortal, Stratovarius, Children of Bodom, Soilwork, etc.
I do realize most of these bands either broke up or are making weak american style metal these days but in the 90's these bands were among the greatest.

the better band: Death hands down is more creative and more talented, i mean pantara used to be a hair/glam band before they switched over to thrash after watching the big 4 blow up lol. Death had its own sound and created its own genre, by far the better band.
The more popular band: without a doubt pantara, feed off the styles of megadeth and metallica and became very famous, even more so when dimebag got killed. Its sad that many metal listeners and even death metal listeners have no idea who Death is and what they did for metal.
As far as influence on today, Death is more influence than pantara as they created death metal and pantara just rode the popularity of thrash ie metallica
Cowboys from hell and Sounds of Perservance
