best orange tree to plant in san diego?

I hope you are having a great weekend. I just finished planting some more purple string beans in the garden. First of all, let me say you will be able to grow any variety of orange you wish because of the weather in San Diego. The best orange tree for you will depend on what you WANT it for.

I have nine (9) fruit trees. I research and study each plant and tree before I plant it. I do not like wasting years on a tree and then find out you have planted the wrong tree. Your average orange tree will not produce oranges at least three years.

The NAVEL varieties of oranges are best for eating because they have an easy peel thick skin and almost seedless. They are very sweet. They get their name because the bottom end of the orange looks like a person's navel. If eating is what you want, I would suggest a Robertson Navel orange tree. They do make great orange juice but the juice loses flavor and vitamin C is kept overnight. My Robertson orange is over twenty (20) years old. I think the juice is better than a valencia IF you drink the juice within six (6) hours.

The VALENCIA varieties of oranges are best for juicing. We grow a lot of valencias in California. Valencia are smaller than navels but contain more juice. You can also squeeze and refrigerate the juice overnight without losing to much flavor and vitamin C.

The Moro (Blood) oranges are medium oranges with thin skin and almost seedless. The flavor taste a little like a fresh raspberry. People who grow them love them. All oranges contain carotene. Moros get their red color from a pigment called anthocyanin. Anthocyanin is a antioxidant that neutralizes the effects of free radicals. Free radicals are agents believed to be responsible for cancer, aging, and other health ailment. People also like to cook meats with Motos.

I would also like to add my two ($.02) cents worth. My favorite orange is a SATSUMA MANDARIN ORANGE. My drawf tree is also twenty (20) years old. You will love this tree. I sometimes eat ten (10) a day. It is very easy to grow, and it will grow very good in your area. Go to the grocery store and check out the prices (very high) of mandarin oranges in the can. They are small sweet and seedless. They are also a beautiful tree.
