Use IE to download Firefox 4 and install, it will take a bit of adjustment getting used to the slimmer interface, but it's still the same old Firefox with complete customization under the View > Toolbar > Customize where you can move anything around, make more Tool bars etc.

Once you got that, hit your Add-ons for new versions and so forth.

Also run Mozilla's browser check and/or Qualy''s Browser check to check the conditions of your plug-ins.

Flash, Reader, FoxitReader, Silverlight, Jave etc., all need updates. Should be uninstalled and reinstalled.

Edit: Chrome is a security nightmare along with Safari and iTunes due to them all being based upon Webkit and it's numerous flaws.
