Difference between MP3 player and iPod?

Ok don't think I am TOO stupid, but I do not own either one. Why? I am not tech savvy, and I don't know the difference between the two. However, I would like to get one eventually, but I want something basic. I have heard also that you can only download from iTunes if you have an iPod. Can someone please enlighten me on all this stuff?? Thanks!!!! I have never even USED an iPod!!!!

Update:

So if not an iPod, what brand does anyone want to recommend?

An iPod is really just a brand of MP3 Player, with some exclusive differences, such as iTunes, App Store, etc. And MP3 player can be just as good as an iPod, just you can only use App Store, etc with iPods. This question is easily answered, but your confusion is understandable. An iPod is simply a type of MP3 player (with more functions).

The confusion arises because in common parlance "iPod" has come to mean "MP3" player in most non-technical media (e.g., television). So someone who says they have an "iPod" might actually be saying they have any of hundreds of other devices, which is a convenient shorthand. An iPod is really one model of Apple Computer's line of media players --the most popular. Many iPod versions also play video.

If you're looking to make a purchase, and you've never used iTunes or any music download service, you don't need an real iPod to do pretty much anything that you would want to do with your music. There are many, many companies which make MP3 players and many of them are MUCH cheaper than Apple's option. And now with the proliferation of music without copyright protection from places like Amazon MP3 you can readily buy music which is basically guaranteed to work with any player you could possibly purchase. I would recommend buying an iPod Touch, there fantastic! :)

I hope that clears things up!

Both are basically the same. But the iPod complicates the process of adding songs to your player. :)

In other mp3 players you can just copy and paste songs. the ipod nano is very sleek and it uses itunes for synchronization. the other mp3 players can use any player to synchronize songs.

some ipods have extra features like, photo viewers, videos and games.

That's correct, actually you can get music from other sources, but to put them on the iPod you'll need iTunes. The software is free, thus you'll need a credit/debit card for registering purposes.

Source(s): iTunes user and own 5 iPods and a couple of Mp3 players.

not really true. if you have itunes you can open the folder the songs are in and move to your mp3. there are mp3s that can do almost the same as ipods
