is there any technology that will allow me to record programs from the tv with out a cable subcription?

I cancelled my cable and am able to watch the basic channels abc, fox, nbc, cbs, pbs for free now.. (saves a lot of channel surfing) but I would like to record some favorite shows and watch later, is there

any tech that I can hook up a bit newer than the old VHS tape machines? ( I don't have one of those anymore)

You can buy a TIVO HD Digital video recorder. They have ATSC tuners built in.

    Here is one example.

If you don't have cable, it should be assumed youare getting your TV from broadcast antenna. Yuo wonly be getting the channels from cable, becasue that would be stealing (being you do not subscribe), and may eventually go away as the cable provider gets around to properly trapping or disconnecting your line.

In any case the technology exists to make DVRs for digital, however, due to the relative unpopularity of OTA (In the USA anyways), not a whole lot of companies make such DVRs.

Of them, some DVD recorders have digital tuners, TiVo HD or Premiere DVRs can tune and record digital antenna, Channel Master sells the DTV-PAL DVR, and there are numerous TV tuner cards for computers, to make them into a DVR. I will not that the TiVo DVRs require subscription to the DVR service, and the Premier models require broadband Internet as well.
