Question about Mormons wrt Race.?

I watched the Bill Maher film Religulous.

Its a crap film, hes far too arrogant for my liking...

Theres a bit on Mormons (Im British I dont think we have them) and I dont know enough about them to tell whether this is true or just a joke.

He says that the book of Mormon says that basically white skinned people are the best and dark skinned people are being punished for not believing...but if they go Mormon their skin can change and go white.

Surely thats not true...

    no, it's not true.

the BoM does use language metapohorically. 'skin of blackness' - 'scales of blackness' to represent a closing off from the words of God. 'white and delightsome' to represent a willingness to listen to the words of God.

the lamenites and the nephites were the same people --- descendants of two brothers nephi and lamen (and others of the family who took sides)....and they switched back and forth with who was good and who was bad.

Have you ever wondered how people who don't know what they are talking about seem to think they know what they are talking about? Ever wonder how people develop prejudice and bias against others when they pick up info that is NOT correct, yet spew it out as if it were? From those that are in the know, such unintelligent statements are laugable, if it were so sad that people actual believe this misinformation. Makes you wonder who is behind spreading falsehoods. But then again, Satan is not the author of truth and would have reason to spead lies.

Sorry, I digress. But if you want ACCURATE information, perhaps you should go to the source. For example, if you want accurate information about Mormons, you should ask one. Or better yet, go to these web pages written by Mormons.

    http://lds.org/ or

    http://mormon.org/

    http://blacklds.org/

Mormons have supported racial causes and provide much humanitarian monies and foods to third world and African counties, as well as supports many black LDS congregations. One of my best friends is black and Mormon and would support these comments.

Go to the blacklds website for proof.

The Book of Mormon does NOT say that white people are better. Nor does it say that black people are bad. What it does say that we all need to follow Christ to receive of his choicest blessings and metophorically, those that follow Christ are "white and delightsome" and those that do not follow Christ are also metaphorically, "dark."

There are many British LDS congregations by the way.

The Book of Mormon talks about an Israelite family that came to the American continent in 600 bc. The family split into 2 groups called Nephites and Lamanite. The Nephites followed God and the Lamanites did not. Over time, these 2 nations had many wars. The Book of Mormon states that because of wickedness, the Lamanites became idle, dark and loathsome. However, at times, the Lamanites actually became more righteous than the Nephites and sent prophets to preach to the Nephites.

The Bookof Mormon never says that one group is better than the other. Here is a statement from the Book of Mromon:

"he inviteth them all to come unto him and partake of his goodness; and he denieth none that come unto him, black and white, bond and free, male and female; and he remembereth the heathen; and all are alike unto God, both Jew and Gentile" (Second Nephi 26:33).

Have you ever noticed that groups of really bad caucasions such as inner city gangs tend to look dark and loathsome?

If you are interested, here is a link to the entire Book of Mormon:

    Hi, I'm a Mormon.

Just a few things about your question.

    1. There are Mormons in the UK. In fact, that's one of the first places that the church went outside of the US and many of the early church leaders were actually British converts. Pretty interesting.

    2. Light skinned and dark skinned: In the Book of Mormon, it's a little more complex than what Maher suggests. There are two groups of people for a large part of the Book of Mormon (called "Nephites" and "Lamanites"--the former typically being associated with being light skinned and the latter being more associated with being dark skinned).

It becomes more complex because there are several periods throughout the Book of Mormon where both sides are righteous or when the Lamanites are righteous and the Nephites are wicked.

The Book of Mormon does talk about the "dark skin" or curse leaving some of these people upon becoming more righteous or "light" people becoming dark as they become wicked.

Anti-Mormon's naturally claim that this is evidence of the racial nature of the Book of Mormon or Joseph Smith. Personally, I believe that it may simply be more metaphorical (i.e. the Bible's reference to the eye's being the "light" of the body) or perhaps a reference to the lifestyle lived by both peoples (industrious and hardworking vs lazy and idolatrous).

Its not true. The scriptures presented to you are taken out of context. Also there are LDS Churchs in the UK and Europe.

    2 Ne. 26: 33

For none of these iniquities come of the Lord; for he doeth that which is good among the children of men; and he doeth nothing save it be plain unto the children of men; and he inviteth them all to come unto him and partake of his goodness; and he denieth none that come unto him, BLACK and white, bond and free, male and female; and he remembereth the heathen; and ALL ARE ALIKE UNTO GOD, both Jew and Gentile.

Somehow the majority of people citing scripture didn't post this.......

Religulous is a clearly biased film. Notice how he talked and made fun of people of other Churches. But when he got onto the LDS(Mormon) Church he HAD to use Ex-Mormons. And all they did was agree with each other.

No, it's not true, what Maher said.

However, you are wrong in that there are no Mormons in Britain. There are two temples in Britain, one in Lancashire and one in Surrey, and they only build those when there are enough Mormons in the area to keep them busy.

Listen, cut and dry, Mormons have always been a racist religion. There is so much nimcompoop associated with that false, man made doctrine that most anything said contrary to it is very well truth.

Bill Maher is not far off. Mormons are a race-hating and simply unGodly religion. They even have their own bible contradictory to truthful Bible teachings. Their founder is a white racist pig.

I have nothing good to say about them except, "Glad you're over there and I'm over here. Don't come hither my way".

Don't worry, Armageddon will set all matters straight and destroy all false religions.

Yes, that's all true, from Maher being rather arrogant to mormon leaders once stating that dark skinned people would change their pigment color as they became sinless.

This short cartoon vid below explains the basis for the mormon god and their beliefs about black skin. If you notice, and they don't read this before replying, they will refute this cartoon in total as erroneous. I won't cite the references here, for space reasons. They know where the references are anyway, but choose to ignore their reality. Now, just to make you aware, there's two curses within mormonism. One for black people (african descent/mark of Cain), and one for "Lamanites", the white skinned people who were turned dark for rebelling and killing off all the other white skinned brothers who were called "Nephites". These pigment changes were their curses to LDS, in both instances. Never mind that Genesis 4 states God "marked" Cain with an unspecified mark---for his PROTECTION, and not as cursed. They believed this cursed by black skin fallacy because it was once popular in European and early American circles, and they simply carried it over into their religion. They will refute this fact also, or blame it all on Brigham Young, their second president, the biggest bigot of them all.

Below is a great article which does state references about the LDS belief and gives a concise history of their racial beliefs up to 1978, when their leaders declared black skinned people "forgiven".

Arrogance doesn't make a person wrong. They have all sorts of crazy doctrine, though once in a while a prophet will come along and 'fix' something.

Old Joe said that Native Americans would turn white if they converted. They were a lost tribe of Jews. Science says different, but who are you going to believe? :)
