Ever remember the young who never age?

Forever Young

Youths sent forth to battle darkness

Who never age in time's passing-

Recalled in May and November,

Absent from the empty strkness

Of the fields we still remember

With paper poppies and colored bunting

On grassy slopes sporting white stones

While bands generate brassy tones.

Our crowds grow older and smaller

As they grow younger and taller.

    yes...they are timeless

    ...with new faces added

    never replacing

    the fields of flowers

    as poppies grow

    too numerous

    for counting....

    you write the face we all see

    the one on the mantle who represents our memory

    perfect timing and flow Shannon

    The red of poppies in my mind on an ancient battlefield now planted with landmines. That's what I saw reading this. And still we send them into the fields, to sow, reap and bring back a harvest of grief.

    And THIS is the shame of war, not the damn glory that is figured so much in recorded poetry from the beginning of time. They young that never get to age and experience life are the fallen.

    This piece portrays that in the stark beauty of its actual horror. A wonderful write!

    Man, this was sad, I so get it.

    and after reading only your question, before I even saw the title or read the poem,

    my mind went to the same place.

    Yes, I don't see the paper poppies any more.

    “To Death”

    Drape not the quick in cerements

    Before their hour has come;

    Come only in the evening, Death!

    Come silently, come peacefully!

    Place coins on lids, steal softly breath;

    Then quietly, so quietly

    Let flesh fall limp and dumb!

    Your empire, less, will surely grow

    And rule alone at last;

    Your final victory assured,

    Wait patiently, respectfully!

    Their moment brief, they’ve each endured.

    Let them not see eternity

    Until the die is cast!

    The generations will be thine;

    Your hunger they will sate.

    Look on the mother and her child;

    Is there not more than harvest there?

    Your plunder will not be defiled

    By watching while she strokes his hair.

    Your name will still be great.
