Will I get in trouble if the government shuts down and doesn't process taxes?
I file my taxes through the mail. I never expect to get anything back and it's a simple return, I do it every year to save money. As long as it's post dated 4-15-2011 I'm fine, now there's this Government Shut down and it states that the IRS will not process paper returns. Will I be penalized because the government shut down and wasn't able to do it? I haven't picked up the paperwork yet. I don't want to file with a tax firm that charges outrageous rates. What do you think??

The IRS will continue to collect taxes. Just because it may not process paper returns does not mean that you can send your return in late.
It's the Post Office that postmarks the date; as long as it's mailed by midnight, you're OK. Many large post offices stay open until midnight on tax day (which, by the way, this year is April 18 for federal returns) to enable that postmark.

Your taxes are still due on the due date. You have to file and post mark before the due date or you will be penalized. But if the government shuts down, you won't be receiving a refund check (but you stated you don't expect on anyways) anytime soon. Kind of funny how that works.

I believe the filing deadline for this year is April 18, 2011. Make sure you get your tax forms or software to give you plenty of time to complete and postmark/file your return before the deadline.

I think you should call your congressman and tell him he should not let the government shut down.
Since the Post office is a self-funded quasi-independent agency, it will not be affected by the shutdown.
IRS will only furlough non-essential personnel such as supervisors, analysts, and people who process your refunds. The collection of taxes and processing receipts is defined in the law as "essential."
You can prepare your return online.

I think you should get the paperwork, get it done and put it in the mail by 4/15.
