I am so blessed! asked in PetsDogs · 1 decade ago

I heard from a groomer that safflower oil helps with shedding?

Our Golden sheds terribly and I was thinking of trying this. She said to add one cooked egg and safflower oil to the food. Has anyone tried this, and if so did it help? and how much oil? I forgot to ask her that.

Oils improve the skin and coat, I don't know that it will significantly reduce shedding. A good quality diet is always the best foundation, along with regular brushing and grooming. If you want to try it, I'd do about a teaspoon of oil per day. As for the eggs, they're far better for them raw than cooked- once cooked, you've already ruined most of the good stuff in them. Eggs should only be fed every other day.

I wouldn't count on it. It is well known that dogs need certain fatty acids to keep their skin and coats in good shape and looking good. Consequently the dog food companies are careful to see to that their foods have more than enough. What is less well know is that too much fat leads to an early death. You can kill a dog adding oil and eggs to its diet when its dog food has all the fat it needs. There may have been a time when it helped, but not today.

Most dogs blow their coat spring and fall. What actually helps is a good brushing every day. I have tried about every brush there is. What I have settled on is one with heavy wire teeth each tipped with a little plastic ball. It is more comfortable for the dogs than the wire slicker brush and faster than the pricey Furminator.
