I think certainly social conservatives want to outlaw abortion. But I don't think the Republican party as a whole does. Just look at how many moderates and liberals the last 3 Republican presidents have appointed to the Supreme Court. I don't think abortion is a major issue among the establishment Republicans and I think they have come to terms with Roe V Wade being the law of the land.
I'm somewhat confused by this attack on Planned Parenthood considering none of their federal funding goes to abortions (the Hyde Amendment prohibits this) and they offer a lot of services that I think everyone agrees with (like screenings for cervical cancer). To me it comes off as the GOP throwing the social conservatives a bone since they hate Planned Parenthood
Correct or incorrect, this is just my honest take on the situation.

You want the truth so here it is. The Republicans approach on Abortion is rooted in several disturbing issues. First on the political front the Abortion issue is a smoke and mirror trick used to link them and their undereducated white Southern Christian base which claims to not believe in abortion and I use that term lightly and you will see why later. . Next their Abortion stance is rooted in the fact that their overwhelming white dominated party who's members help comprise only 17% of the earths population will soon be a minority in America also. Despite what you read, white women for the most part have always had money to get abortions and they do at about the same rate as other groups but you will have to search hard for those facts, paying cash doesn't leave a money trail just ask your local drugs dealer or banker. Which brings us to the next point which is the Republicans do not believe that women are mens at least white mens are equal. Don't fool yourself women the Republican Party doesn't believe in equal rights period. The Abortion issue is about white men maintaining some form of power over women while trying to maintain their population numbers to hold on to power in America. Proof ..... come from the likes of Republican Christian Conservative and who also appears to be sometimes Nazi sympathizer Pat Buchanan who was a former Nixon speech writer and former presidential candidate who once stated on numerous round table cable shows that white people need to start having more babies in-order to maintain their majority in America. Thus the Republican Party really wants to outlaw Abortion in America but not for the phony reasons they state in public. Trust me!

If a woman wants to get an abortion, she will get an abortion whether it is legal or not. That's the way it was before the Roe V. Wade decision in 1973.
In the famous (infamous) supreme court ruling, it was defined as a woman's choice. So after all these years, its settled. Not much to do to change it's legality.
By the same ruling, though, it is firmly decided that it is a choice. Therefore, since it is a personal choice (like breast augmentation, or plastic surgery), and it is not a matter of public safety or public welfare, it should not be funded by the government.
By US supreme court ruling, it is illegal for the government to fund abortions. The law may allow it but by the same law, it cannot legally provide funding.

Strange how under the Bush years and when the Republicans had full control for quite some time, abortion wasn't touched.
These people couldn't accept reality and facts, if it slapped them in the face.
Sure there are some that want to see abortion outlawed, but that's simply not going to happen. The law is the law and even many Republicans I know have no intentions of changing a law that is in place.
Yet, these hypocrites have the nerve to refer to us as the fear mongers. HA!

What I don't get is that some on the left think we're 'evil' for opposing abortion as a means of birth control as it's obviously used today. It's a sad situation. I hope that years from now it will be viewed the same way slavery is by most people now. As a disgraceful and dehumanizing practice. A National Nightmare.

Of course they do.

It's funny how their tax dollars already were not going to take the life of "unborn children." Cancer screenings and cheap pap smears, yes. Personally, I don't mind my tax dollars going towards cancer screenings and affordable pap smears.

I'm a conservative, so I'll answer from that point of view: We DO want to outlaw it, but practically speaking we know that is highly unlikely. So, we seek to make abortion as difficult as possible with minor, smaller steps. This is a very common practice in U.S. law. Dems cannot outlaw tobacco, so they raise the price with taxes and outlaw smoking in buildings. It's the same thing; one small step at a time.

abortion hasn't been funded by the government for over 30 years
yes most of republicans have proven to want to outlaw it by saying it
its not that liberals want to kill babies, that would be insane, but almost all (if not all of us) we feel that people should have the right to choose to get an abortion because its their american right
and just to let you know im a christian and also don't belong to a particular party

The politicians know that abortions cannot be outlawed---it is a SCOTUS issue. But they continue to rile up the left and right both--however, followers of the left tend to believe the right is going to be taken away when in reality----the only thing we on the right demand is that we not be forced to pay for it, doctors not be forced to perform them if they do not believe in it, and that we are forced to accept it as the norm. People can still have their abortions--no one can stop them. But the rest of us should never have to pay for it.

What federal funding? Why do Conservatives/Republicans think any abortions are federally funded? That sort of funding has been prohibited by law since the 1970s. All abortions are paid for by private donations and fees paid by the person who is getting the abortion. Federal funding only applies to non-abortion services at family planning clinics, and even then it's not a whole lot.
I like the three thumbs down from morons who don't know what the law is. Federal funds are prohibited from going to abortion procedures at any family planning clinic. In fact, the federal government is prohibited from making any law concerning abortion. Period. Individual states can make up their mind about what type of abortion services they provide as long as they do not try to override the decision handed down in Roe V. Wade. The only thing the federal government has done was prohibit its own funds being used to pay for such procedures. Nothing in any health care legislation has had federal funding for abortions included. Please stop giving in to BS.
Damn.
