"Where's the question about negative messages in fairy tales?"?
Someone earlier had an interesting question about negative messages from children's fairy tales. It was clear that the asker already knew the answer he/she wanted to hear (gender stereotypes, sexism, damsel in distress, etc). I had a nice meaty reply prepared, but then the question disappeared.
Anyway, here's my answer:
It sounds like you already have your "correct" answer in mind, so here are a few more inaccurate stereotypes found in fairy tales:
- Bears are capable of constructing houses and furniture, and cooking porridge
- Witches cook and eat children. This is patently false. Everyone knows they eat Hot Pockets.
- Giants live in castles at the top of beanstalks. In fact, that's only the wealthy ones. There are also poor giants who have to live in little giant shantytowns much further from the top of the beanstalks.
- They all live happily ever after. Since when? In reality, the princess usually ends up sleeping with the riding instructor, and it turns out the prince has had a thing with the fairy godmother since before she even knew the princess.
@Megan: Thanks, sis
@Smugleaf: yeah, I'm not saying I bought into the original asker's viewpoint. I was just bummed I didn't get to add my facetious reply to her question. And TV Tropes is an awesome website.

Lol. I don't know it was delteted. :). This was my answer.
"Well especially in places like the U.S.A. the stereo type that every little girl is a Princess & that she will find a beautiful Prince to sweep her off her feet & give her everything her heart desires has influenced a lot of little Girls in my opinion.
Most Little boys in the U.S.A. don't get told that they are a little Prince & that one day he will find a beautiful Princess that will sweep him off his feet & give him everything his heart desires ;). They are told that little Girls are different & that they better behave towards them & not make them cry.
So basically what i'm trying to say is you are saying that these Disney tales have a negative stereo type towards Females. And i say you are right, but not in the same way that you are. I think they've been negative because they give little girls the idea that they have a sense of entitlement & that little boys will be their instrument to do with as they please to make their lives better ;)."
