What do you think of this quote?

"The Constitution only gives people the right to pursue happiness. You have to catch it yourself."

-BF

Update:

Actually Franklin didn't own slaves...nice try.

Update 2:

WC: I would beg to differ since was it not the USSC that judged federal social programs as constitutional by the "promote the general welfare" clause?

In a way I like the quote because it says the government only provides an environment in which you may pursue happiness, not happiness itself. If you want to be happy, it's up to YOU to be happy.

But in the phrase 'pursuit of happiness', -pursuit- wasn't meant in the sense of -chasing- happiness. It's more like in the sense of 'Trivial Pursuit'. It means the PRACTICE of happiness. Franklin, as a man of letters and a very capable writer, would have understood that.

The right to pursue happiness emanates, if at all, from the Declaration of Independence, not the Constitution.

According to the Supreme Court, neither the Declaration of Independence nor the preamble to the U.S. Constitution confers any legal rights to individuals.

There is a major lack of congruent messaging between BF's understanding of the legal effect of our Founding Documents and the Supreme Court's interpretation.

I think that Ben got it wrong.

You do not have the right to pursue happiness, Americans are too dumb for that.\

That's what I learned in my days of community organizer anyway.

You must wait for the government to make you happy.
