Why Does Jeff Passan Hate Jeter so Much?
It seems to me that Derek Jeter has been living rent-free in Jeff Passan's head these past few years. Almost every article he writes now has something to do with Jeter being terrible.
Now, Jeter is a polarizing figure - You either love him or hate him, and he has his share of writers who bow at his feet and writers who spit in his face, we all understand that. But never have I seen a sportswriter so obsessed with bashing a sports icon in my life. We know he hates the Yankees (he even once said that Teixera was the worst defensive first baseman in the league, when pretty much everyone agrees he's the best), but this doesn't seem like an anti-Yankee thing, it sounds like he specifically hates Derek Jeter.
So I bring the question to you; What has Jeter done to Passan to annoy him so much? Feel free to be as creative in your answers as possible, but try to keep it clean. Let's see if we can come up with some good ones.

Because Derek Jeter is a first ballot Hall of famer. Journalists make their money by getting you to read their articles it is that simple. If he wrote a negative story about Ryan Franklin would you care? I will bet you dollars to donuts you wouldn't be asking this question on here if he did. They talk about the high profile players only because that is who the majority of fans want to read about. I doubt he has any real issues with Derek Jeter I think Jeff Passan is under a lot of pressure because his competition is fierce. He writes about things that will draw you in.

I read the article where Passan pretty much says that Jeter is washed-up--even though the season is less than two weeks old. Passan is one of those writers who makes outrageous claims and tries to write (or make up) controversial stories---but then ridicules people who challenge him in their comments. I guess Jeff Passan forgot that Jeter got off to a HORRIBLE start in 2004, and was 0-for-32 at one point, then the slump continued even after he broke that streak. Seems to me that Jeter has done pretty well since then, and probably should have been MVP in 2006.
Jeter has always been careful with what he says. Even me, as a life-long Yankee fans knows that Jeter is one of the most boring interviews in sports. He is so careful to not say the wrong thing that he never really says anything, and I'm sure Passan thinks the same way. Passan has done just what he wanted to do when he wrote the column--got attention and people talking about his "writing". But he's only a sportswriter, and his opinion doesn't matter any more than yours or mine.
I am not sure that I would consider Jeter to be polarizing though. To me, polarizing is Barry Bonds, A-Rod, or Manny. A lot of people don't like Jeter, mostly because he plays on the Yankees, but they still respect him.

Because Passan is an idiot. He's one of the worst sports writers in the modern media.
And Alex, the idea that Jeter is an average player in a big city is so ridiculous it barely deserves comment, but I will do it anyway. Jeter is an historically great player in the top-five of all shortstops in history. The fact that he is in New York gets him a lot of media attention, but it doesn't make him great. If he played in a small market, he wouldn't be Michael Young, he'd be Robin Yount (only better). Great players are great players no matter where they play. If Jeter played for The Pirates, he'd still have 3,000 hits and be considered one of the greatest shortstops ever, we'd just be sitting here lamenting that he's a star on a bad team who never got his shot at the World Series.
And this is coming from someone not all that fond of him!

Passan knows that if Jeter played his entire career in Texas instead of with the NYY he would be Michael Young.
An All Star shortstop in his prime and a very solid career but not a legend of the game. With his 3000 hits I suppose he'd have a shot at the HOF but he certainly wouldn't be First Ballot
His postseason greatness would have never happened because Texas never made the playoffs in the 2000 decade.
If Edgar Renteria was a NYY lifer he'd be considered a legend because THAT guy is an awesome postseason hitter and he'd have helped the Yankees to even more World series titles.

When I read Jeff Passan ... I can see that the Yankee fans don't want to admit that Jeter is an old fart with poor bat speed and should have been dropped off the team instead of been given a big contract. He will be batting 7th in the order in July
