Rhythms and rudiments to practice for high school drumline auditions?

Hi, I'm an eighth grader and the auditions for drumline are in about a month. I'm a rather quick learner, especially when it comes to snare things. I want to prepare myself for the audition because my goal is for snare.

I know that since I'm a freshman and a girl at that, my chances for snare are rather slim, but I still want to try my best for it and I want to be ready and prepared for my audition.

So, I was wondering if anyone could help me out by giving me some rhythms or rudiments I should practice. I have a\exercises that both my private teacher and school band teachers have given me, but I'd like to have a little bit more to work with, as well.

Thanks so much!

The 40 essential rudiments would be a great, great thing to learn as a percussionist..

But besides that, there are things that should never be overlooked in auditions, such as basics, basics, and more basics! I can't stress that enough. Instructors are looking for those with foundation, not flashy licks. Work on exerices that improve your foundation, such as 8s/Eights/8 on a hand/8-8-16s, an accent exercise, any double beat exercise, and a triplet exercise. These can all be found online.

There are many more I could tell you that seem highly important, but I believe that those are the most commonly used ones at first.

Also, some exercises use hybrid rudiments as their base technique. Hybrid rudiments are basically "advanced" rudiments made by people and are still being made. I recommend not dabbling on these until you've got the essential rudiments and most exercises at fast tempos.

Source(s): 5 years of percussion experience. 1 season of cymbals, 4 seasons of pit (2 as captain), 1 season of tenors. E-mail me if you have any other questions or want explanations of exercises.
