Why do I always feel like I need to stretch part of my back?
For over a decade now (I'm 26) I have on and off had an extreme feeling that comes and goes where I really need to stretch the right side of my middle back. I can only explain it as a feeling of "tightness" in the muscle, and it's always in the same spot only on the right side. This occurs during periods where I've exercised and worked out a lot, and occurs even when I'm in phases where I don't do this often. From doing some research, it seems like it's the longissimus thoracis muscle that is causing this annoying feeling, as it's the muscle right along the spine on the right side.
Stretching relieves this feeling very temporarily, however it always comes back and I feel I need to do it all the time. What is the problem? Is it a knot? I've tried to have it massaged but it doesn't appear to do much, perhaps the massage just did not go deep enough. Any ideas?

Its to do with tensions in the back and you are naturally releasing the muscle joints by stretching.
I do this!
It can be a knot and needs massage.....sometimes by lifting up the arm exposing more of the back to do this helps. Get someone to massage up and down the main muscles either side of the back while you are laying face down on the floor with hand resting above your head. Any sensitive areas massage more but not too hard.
I note you said exercise a lot....this may aggravate your tension...depending on what you are using to exercise with??? I have practised Tai Chi for 30yrs after having a spell of martial arts beforehand.
I have pulled everything in martial arts taking some many weeks to repair hamstrings, back, hands arms, you name it!! Then I came on Tai Chi....we swing very much to remove tensions in the back and shoulder areas as a warm up....and my long term back problem went!
Tension in that area is your problem and you are releasing it by stretching partly.
