although there is set up a sort of procession for preparing for the position......an order like in the bible. after each passes away, the senior apostle is in line.

First off, there is the First Presidency which is the President/Prophet of the Church and his two counselors and then there's the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. That's a total of fifteen Apostles generally.

When the Prophet's predecessor passes away, it is not his first or second counselor who takes over. Remaining fourteen Apostles are ranked in seniority, or how long they've been in the Quorum. Let's put it this way with the current members:

Thomas S. Monson (the current Prophet) was ordained an Apostle in 1963. His first counselor, Henry B. Eyring, was ordained an Apostle in 1995 and second counselor Dieter F. Uchtdorf was ordained an Apostle in 2004. The Twelve themselves are Boyd K. Packer (ordained 1970), L. Tom Perry (1974), Russell M. Nelson (1984), Dallin H. Oaks (1984), M. Russell Ballard (1985), Richard G. Scott (1988), Robert D. Hales (1994), Jeffrey R. Holland (1994), David A. Bednar (2004), Quentin L. Cook (2007), D. Todd Christofferson (2008), and Neil L. Andersen (2009).

So let's say both Monson and Packer pass away. The next Apostle to be Prophet would be Perry for he had been an Apostle longer than the other Apostles from Nelson to Andersen.

I'm sure it all will make sense to you by going to http://www.lds.org/ and http://www.mormon.org/ and talking with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (even not on Yahoo! Answers).

The paragraph the precedes your quote sheds some gentle on your question. this is quoted under. "The Lord has informed me to ask the Latter-day Saints a question, and He additionally informed me that in the event that they could pay attention to what I pronounced to them and answer the question placed to them, by employing the Spirit and technique of God, they could all answer alike, and that they could all have self assurance alike with connection with this remember." God is the reason that the church stopped. Had God been incredibly worried relating to the practice of the plurality of different halves being persevered then He would not have allowed the U. S. Congress to bypass any regulations against it. Why did God elect to end the practice of the plurality of different halves the way he did I have no concept nor do I care. yet this plenty i understand and testify of, God is on the top of this Church and he's the reason something occurs interior it. And as Joseph Smith so eloquently pronounced "no unhallowed hand can give up the artwork from progressing" and there is not any hallowed hand that desires to give up it from progressing. This I say interior the call of my Savior even Jesus Christ. Amen.

There are 15 apostles who are called to be prophets, seers and revelators. Twelve of them make up the quorum of 12 apostles. The other three are the first presidency with one serving as the president of the church. The prophet is the only one who receives revelation for the church. When the current prophet dies, the senior, or longest serving apostle becomes the prophet and a new apostle is called.

When there is a vacancy in the quorum of the twelve, they pray about who to call to fill the empty spot. It goes by seniority. When the prophet dies, the next in seniority is always the one called to be the new prophet. The next in seniority is the president of the Quorum of the twelve.

Lulz, look at the Mormon zombies, "God chooses the prophet!" Mormons are the Mt. Everest of brainwashed religious people.

Sorry. Open question means open to all. No restrictions.

By death. When the last one keels over, the oldest "apostle" is next in line for the job. Joseph Smith assumed one of his brothers would take over for him as his son was still young, as everyone else did. Brigham Young disabused them all of THAT insane notion.

Most "current prophets" choose themselves!!! Failing that, they promise favors to those in power.
