How long does your passport have to be valid for in order to travel to El Salvador?

Hello everyone,

I have an American passport and I plan on traveling to El Salvador. My passport is only valid for 3 days from my return to the USA (I return on the 11th and it expires on the 14th). Does anyone know how long my passport has to be valid for in order to go to El Salvador? Someone told me 6 months but I've been there in the last 3 months (which is in that 6 month window).

I know that in order to return to the USA it only has to be valid for 1 day.

Thanks a lot

You have to have 6 months before expiration.

I had to get mine renewed last August, still had 4 months left on it.

Q:How long is a passport valid and when should I renew my passport?

a:If you were over age 16 when your passport was issued, your passport is valid for 10 years.

If you were age 15 or younger when your passport was issued, your passport is valid for 5 years.

The Issue Date of your passport can be found on the data page of your Passport Book or on the front of your Passport Card.

If possible, you should renew your passport approximately nine (9) months before it expires. Some countries require that your passport be valid at least six (6) months beyond the dates of your trip. Some airlines will not allow you to board if this requirement is not met.

Ask your travel agent or AAA.

It really shouldn't be an issue unless you have some sort of catastrophic issue, but you're probably cutting it a bit close, there.

It's not really a law, but a recommendation. Technically, your passport is good until its expiration date, but if it's going to expire, you're going to get a new one, right? Sounds like the issue here is that, when you send in the old one, it might not be back before you leave on this trip....I'd check with a reputable authority.

Your passport just needs to be current an valid through your stay. Site below always says if there are any special passport requirements. Read under Entry/Exit Requirements. BUT, it certainly is not wise to let things run so close...what if you got sick or were delayed in returning? Anyway, when you renew it when you return, it is good for 10 years.

you do no longer want a Visa in case you're u . s . citizen, basically a no longer-expired passport ( would desire to be a minimum of 6 month in the previous expiration date). in case you have a green Card you do want visa + valid passport of the country you're born in.
