Can I drink MILK instead of Barium for my ct scan of the abdomen?

I read somewhere that a quart of milk before the ct scan will show up the abdomen as well as the barium shake does. Is this true and do you think I could just tell them I drank the nasty stuff they gave me but drink a quart of milk instead and it would show up all the organs in my abdomen?

Drink the barium. Is it worth possibly risking your life over?

Don't worry about the barium enema. It's not something you would CHOOSE to have done but it doesn't hurt. Please feel free to email me if you want more info. It's a bit personal. There are lots of things that can cause bowel discomfort - mostly not terribly serious even though they can be fantastically uncomfortable. A common one is 'diverticulitis' or various similar names. These are little 'pockets' that form on the side of the bowel where rubbish can get caught, leading to inflammation and a lot of discomfort. There are other similar conditions, but there is no point in speculating about your specific problem because we are not in a position to know. The tests will narrow it down. We are capable of imaging far worse than might actually exist so try to relax about the whole thing - stress plays havoc with bowel problems. Good luck.

It won't work. If it did, think of all the money the hospital would save not having to buy barium. Milk is not opaque to X-rays like BaSO4 is.

Absolutely not. If that worked they would have people drink milk not barium, it's cheaper and much more pleasant. You can't believe everything you hear.
