If by gnats you mean fruit flies then 1st remove any fresh fruit out in the open in your home, as fermenting fruit is what draws them. Then set a simple but very effective trap for them: fill a glass jar with 1/2 c apple cider vinegar cover it with plastic wrap and secure wrap with a rubber band then poke small holes in the wrap big enuf to let the tiny flies in but not so big that they can come and go in & out of the jar easily. A tip of a toothpick should make large enuf holes. Place it in an area infested with fruit flies. The fruit flies can't resist the vinegar and will seek any way into get to it but will be trapped by the plastic wrap and die if the holes are small enuf. Many will also drown themselves in the vinegar. Use more than 1 jar if you have a large infestation.fruit flies will diminish within hours as they get trapped & will be gone within 1 to 3 days depending on how severe your infestation.

The source of the gnats is where they are laying their eggs.

    Maybe in plant soil.

    In a bad potato.

Where they are hovering is where they are laying eggs.

Some soapy water will attract and drown the gnats.

If the gnats eggs and larvae are in plant soil, some insecticide made for plants will kill them. Or some lemon joy dish soap and water will kill them. Or letting the soil dry will harm them. Changing the soil will get rid of them.

2 table spoons of lemon joy or ivory liquid dish soap to a gallon of water.

Haven't had them since last Fall and even though it's still cold outside, I saw my first 2 yesterday. Last year, I asked this question so I know there are tons of answers already. Just copy & paste it into the bar where it says "what are you looking for and they will come up. I'm going to do it now. One said to put a saucer or dish with sweet (?) & they'll go to it & drown. Can't remember the ingredients; but will search for myself now. Good Luck

PS I believe they are tiny flies

Source(s): I found the remedy by doing what I recommended above. It was some red wine/vinegar with a little diswashing liquid, cover small glass with clear wrap & then poke some fork holes in them & the gnats supposedly will go away. Last year it was a bag of potatos that were in my back hall that were old (not rotten). When we threw them out, gnats were gone. Now, I don't have any potatoes in the house!
