Why do some christians believe in heaven and hell?

Where did the idea of heaven and hell come from? the bible doesn't support either of these ideas.

This view on hell came about through traditional Catholic artwork, which became popular some centuries ago, but this is a misleading image.

When the bible used the word Hell, it is referring to Gehenna, which is a real place where dead bodies were burned back 2000 years ago. The reference to this place is a metaphor for saying "you will be destroyed", or more simply "You will cease to exist".

If you read the bible carefully, it says nothing about people going to a place called heaven after they die. It does speaks of the Kingdom of Heaven, and the Kingdom of God, but it speaks of these things in present tense, and does not refer to them as an afterlife.

When the bible does talk of an afterlife, it actually refers to a physical resurrection of our bodies here on earth. Our bodies are said to be 'made new', meaning they have been restored (In other words, we aren't going to zombies). And the afterlife is going to be here on earth, as the bible says; "Blessed are the meek for they will inherit the earth." There are other passages that support this too.

So why do christians believe heaven and hell? it seems most of them don't even know anything about their own religion.

Update:

I mean. Why do christians interpret heaven to be a real place where the bible never said anything about it being real, and say hell is where you will be tortured, where the bible clearly says other wise?

You're not even answering my question properly. Your just saying those who don't believe in heaven and hell are evil. Which is invalid.

As an athiest i know more about your religion than most of you, it seems.

Update 2:

Yes christ spoke of heaven and hell. What i'm trying to say is the bible says Hell is not an actual place. It is a metaphore for ceasing to exist. And that heaven is only mentioned as the kingdom of heaven and in the present tense. Therefore it has nothing to do with the afterlife.

Where did the idea of heaven and hell come from? the bible doesn't support either of these ideas.

--I'd ask you to prove it, but that would be asking to disprove a negative. Anyways, this is completely untrue. See John 14:1-3 for one of the many examples of heaven, and Revelation 14:11 for hell.

This view on hell came about through traditional Catholic artwork, which became popular some centuries ago, but this is a misleading image.

--And traditional Catholic artwork is based off scriptural passages.

When the bible used the word Hell, it is referring to Gehenna, which is a real place where dead bodies were burned back 2000 years ago.

--You use half truths, hell sometimes is synonymous with Gehenna, but very rarely.

The reference to this place is a metaphor for saying "you will be destroyed", or more simply "You will cease to exist".

--This is your incorrect interpretation of the passages. As stated in Revelation, "And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever." and that does not sound like simply ceasing to exist.

If you read the bible carefully, it says nothing about people going to a place called heaven after they die.

    --Incorrect. See Luke 23:32-33

It does speaks of the Kingdom of Heaven, and the Kingdom of God, but it speaks of these things in present tense, and does not refer to them as an afterlife.

--So you admit it but deny it means heaven. You are greatly twisting parts of scripture and ignoring others, such as John 14:2, which refers to the future, in heaven.

When the bible does talk of an afterlife, it actually refers to a physical resurrection of our bodies here on earth.

--Incorrect. The only time this is mentioned is in Christ's 1000 year reign on earth.

Our bodies are said to be 'made new', meaning they have been restored (In other words, we aren't going to zombies).

--Nobody said we were going to be zombies walking on earth. Keep your words out of my mouth.

And the afterlife is going to be here on earth, as the bible says; "Blessed are the meek for they will inherit the earth." There are other passages that support this too.

--Please note that earth will be recreated and Jesus will rule for 1000 years. And in the same passage, heaven is mentioned. Don't take scripture out of context.

So why do christians believe heaven and hell? it seems most of them don't even know anything about their own religion.

--I clearly know more than you.

They believe in heaven and hell so that they can scare you schittless and get you to do as they want. It's the same thing when you're a kid: You get a good report, you go to the icecream parlour and get a double sundae, you get a bad report, you get grounded with no X.box for two weeks. Except here you get no x.box for ALL eternity in a place with no air conditioning.

I swear I believe in God but after working in an office where 50% of personnel are christian I've learned a thing or two about being a SUPREME BULLSCHITTER and getting away with brainwashing the masses.

Because they know where they came from --So they know where they are going -- Or they believe what they know and don't know what they believe --They have all the facts together and had some Hellenized Jew write it down 1600 years ago-- A defector of Judah-- And he aint changing religions again -- That was a one time thing ++ he believes what he knows this time

Jesus spoke of heaven 238 times, and many warnings about hell and the Lake of fire. If it is not a real Place then all Jesus did for us was in vain.

    Some??

All believers in Christ, the Saviour, the Word, the Messiah for the entire world believe in heaven and hell because Jesus does.

He went into hell and preached after he had willingly given His life a ransom for sin.

Then, He ascended into heaven and now sits at the right hand of the Father, still living making intercession for the saints (believers).

Those who do not believe in Him do not get the right concepts of eternity.

All Christians do. If you don't believe in heaven and hell, you are not Christian. Christ repeatedly spoke of both heaven and hell.
