What worked for your excruciating sciatic pain?

Question

My mom was jus diagnosed with sciatica and experiencing unbearable pain. It went from a small pain in her left buttocks to excruciating pain in her whole left buttock, hip, and back thigh within two weeks. She’s been put on a number of different pain medications that don’t seem to be working. She was put on Vicodin and that worked for a couple of hours one day but did nothing for her the next. She’s on another medication and says it takes her pain from a 10 to an 8 but that is not enough. She went to a massage therapist and felt great while on the table after a bit but as soon as she got up it was killing her again. I’ve read some find a chiropractor helped them when others say it made their sciatic worse. Any suggestions for pain management or professional help? This is just awful and my heart breaks for my mom and anyone who has ever experienced this.

Nancy I cannot remember all that they put her on. She's on Norco right now and I cannot remember the muscle relaxer. It's gotten worse since my question. It's turned into full leg muscle spasms. :(

Poor thing!

I just had surgery on my back (spinal fusion), and sciatica was just one of the things that hurt so I know how she feels.  I am not suggesting surgery, unless she cannot find pain relief.  Then, and only then, she might consider getting a surgical consult.

Do you know the name of the medication she is currently on?  I promise I will write back - over the past 5 years I have been on every medication and tried every pain cure, and my heart just goes out to her.  It can be SO miserable.
