I broke the lock on my front door, HELP?
hello, Today I managed to break the lock on my front door, one of the standard modern locks on these white plastic doors. I put my key in thinking things where normal, turned the key, feeling a weird resistance~ By now it was too late, and opened the door. only to notice my mom left the keys on the other side. So after 10 minutes trying to get the keys out (success) we find the lock is now seizing up and only lets me take the keys out if the door is locked. What the hell can I do? We can't afford a new lock.
I need a solution, or I'm going to keep hearing this whole spiel of how I was an idiot for trying to unlock a door without knowing the keys where in the other side... although there's no way I could have known untill it was too late.
i mean, if i try telling her its dumb to leave keys in the door like that she goes on this tirade about how ITS HER DOOR and she paid for it and I'm irresponsible and should have checked etc... yeah, like I have X-ray vision. I confessed that I don't expect people to do stupid things like this, but she didn't take kindly to that admission.
So I'd like to know
How can I fix the lock?
How can I reason with my mom?

The cheapest thing to try first is to do the reverse of what made it go wrong. Double sided cylinders work by a internal cam being engaged by the key being inserted on one side, but having two keys in at once has sent the barrels out of sync. I have fixed this situation in the past by having the key in one side and picking the other. However if the lock is actually broken i advise a replacement, they are not too expensive, just make sure you buy the right size (the correct length on each side of the middle cam) or the key way will either protrude too far out or not far enough. Or just call a locksmith, times are hard, we need the work :)
PS mothers cant be reasoned with

Get yourself a cylinder removal key, remove the cylinder from the lock, then purchase a suitable replacement lock cylinder for your door from a reputable locksmiths (most new locks come with a pair of keys)
Problem solved. I have listed a site where you can get door cylinders.

Anywhere that you can buy these doors normally sell the replacement locks and there are cheap and easy to replace a simple screw on the door edge at the handle height to take out and slide it out. Simple

Your error you pay. The good news is you can buy replacement cylinders for the lock. You need to identify the lock and then you can acquire one. If you are in the Uk Screwfix sell a range. If you are in the USA (mom) you will have to look elsewhere.

The easiest solution would be to buy a new lock cylinder. If you try contacting these guys they should be able to sort one out for you, there low cost as they manufacture pvc-u products. www.windowforce.co.uk or google "windowforce" its easy enough to change and they are available on the phone to give you advice. hope this helps
