What kind of converter box and amplified antenna do I need?

I am dropping my cable tv. I don't have a flat screen tv. I have the analog tv, I think.

I understand I need a digital converter box and an amplified antenna. I've been searching on Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy - and alot of the ratings are not good.

Can someone recommend a certain brand ?

Also, I need the antenna inside, rather than outside, because I can't install it outside.

Thank you for any help.

Update:

Yes, I am in the USA, Florida in a pretty large city. My televisions were bought before 2008, I believe I boughth them in 2005 or 2006.

Thank you all for your feedback. I may have to reconsider getting an outside antenna.

Also, let me ask--- do you need an antenna for each tv--IF if is an "inside Antenna"?

The following assumes you are in the U.S. or Canada.

First, are you certain you need a converter? If you bought your TV in the U.S. after March 2007, you don't. It has the necessary tuner built-in.

If you have an older TV, it *may* need a converter. Check its specs for an "ATSC" digital tuner. That's what you need, either in your TV or in a converter, for over-the-air (OTA) reception with an antenna. Without a built-in ATSC tuner, you will need the converter.

As for indoor antennas, be aware that they disappoint most viewers to some degree, even the best of them. All indoor antennas are a compromise for what really works: a full size model mounted above the roof. But if you can't do that and want to save time, money, and disappointment by buying the best indoor antenna available, get the one in the first link below. It will outperform virtually anything else you can put indoors. Just keep your expectations modest--most viewers never are able to receive all the channels they want with an indoor antenna, even that one.

For a lot of guidance on everything related to antennas, including specifics for your location, see the 2nd link below. If you're in Canada, use the 3rd link.

    -------------------

Per your additional details: full size antennas mounted above the roof can often supply signal to more than one TV through a splitter. It depends on your incoming signal strength--the quality of your antenna and how close your are to the broadcast towers.

For indoor antennas, it's not practical to use one antenna for two TVs. You need all the signal voltage you can get from an indoor antenna, and splitting it up among multiple TVs (especially with a long run of feedline) will reduce your already poor signal level, causing you to lose channels you might otherwise be able to get.

The big question is how far are the broadcast towers?

Inside antennas are best within say 12 miles with the

    antenna in a patio window.

Radio Shack still sells the top rated Digital

Stream converter box for $60. I would spend that money

towards a 26 flat panel tv instead.

Walmart sells the RCA 1450 black flat

square amplified antenna for $29.96 which

    works good.

Check out http://www.antennaweb.org/ . TV might not be watchable without a rooftop antenna in your area.
