Yet another ab/cd debate. I wish people would stop asking these questions as they'll always get a debate.

Answer: The equation 6 / 2 ( 1 + 2 ) is poorly written and ambiguous. It should have been written as either...

    (6/2) * (1+2)

    or

    6 / [2(1+2)]

No self-respecting mathematician would have written with this notation.

    (6/2) * (1+2) = 6

    or

    6 / [2(1+2)] = 1

    6 / 2(1+2) = 6 / 6 = 1

    I am assuming that the expression is 6/2 * (1 + 2). Use PEMDAS:

    Parentheses

    Exponents

    Multiplication and Division

    Addition and Subtraction

    Follow from top to bottom!

    6/2 * (1 + 2)

    = 3 * 3 [Parentheses > Addition; Division]

    = 9 [Multiplication]

    I hope this helps!

The answer is 9. The correct order of operations is parentheses first, then exponents, then multiplication and division simultaneously from left to right and finally addition and subtraction simultaneously from left to right. 6 ÷ 2 × (1+2) = 6 ÷ 2 × 3 = 3 × 3 = 9.
