the hormones don't "stop" when you get your period.
the hormones prevent ovulation, which is prevented even if you get your period every month, as long as you are on the birth control.
once you go off of birth control, however, the ovulation-preventing hormones do leave your system, which is how/why you can then get pregnant.
if you didn't put the patch back on as scheduled, your cycle might be a little off schedule this month, so it's not necessarily a good idea just to wait to get your period to see if you are pregnant. wait until your period is due or a bit past due (if that happens) and then take a home pregnancy test, just to be safe. there is always a chance that you could be pregnant if you have sex, protected or not, so you might as well just get confirmation from a test. best wishes :)
