It's the old English system. Canada, the UK and a bunch of other places used to use it as well, they just switched over to metric. The US never made the change.

I think it had something to do with us completely splitting off from the British Empire during/before the American Revolution. Dont listen to idiots like "Mexican Dial Up", we still use the metric system, its just not the primary one that we use.
