Sole proprietor using FEIN?

I am starting a retail store and would prefer not to give out my SSN to distributors. I know a sole proprietor can obtain a FEIN. I don't have employees. I was wondering if anyone had any insight on this issue?

I believe that's a wise decision. You will be filling out a lot of W-9s so you don't want you SS number everywhere.

you certainly can get an EIN to signify your sole proprietor business since you feel you want to guard your SSN

    it isn't necessary but permissable

Go to IRS.GOV and under EIN do the online application and get one for your use. No problemo and it is fairly idiot proof.

You should DEFINITELY get an EIN. As you pointed out, you DON"T want to give out your SS#.
