Hybrid cars are an interesting topic. We offer a few select hybrids and the main reason people buy a hybrid is to get exceptional gas mileage out of a vehicle that would not normally get exceptional gas mileage. It is very difficult to draw up figures and give you exact statistics to show your grandparents.
If you are in the realm of trying to sway their opinion on buying a new energy efficient vehicle, I would look no further than the Chevrolet Volt. This car is run off of electricity that plugs into any 120v outlet at home. On a single charge the Volt can get anywhere from 20 to 40 miles of electric driving pending driving conditions. Upon completion of the electric cycle, there is a gasoline powered generator that offers more electricity to the Volt and gives it additional mileage. If you are in the market for energy efficiency, you want to look into a Volt.

Hybrid cars don't save money in the long run. They depreciate much quicker than any other cars and the batteries in some hybrids can cost over 5,000 dollars to replace. Having work done on them is also immensely costly. And if you're trying to argue an enviromentalism point, then you're off anyways. The process of making the Hybrid, battery and all, does more damage to the enviroment than the life of a gasoline car. Just get a diesel Volkswagen, yes diesel costs a bit more than gasoline, but you get much better mileage and the car lasts longer. The Polo Blue Motion VW gets 73 MPG HWY/ 57MPG CITY and it's diesel.

It is hard to come up with figures. The reason being that some hybrids are having battery problems. Replacement costs are running in the 3000 dollar range, that is a lot of gas! So there is a 1/100 chance (made up percentage) of having to spend 3000 dollars or more in the first five years of ownership for a new battery. Not good odds.

The simplest answer is to buy it yourself then they can't tell you what to drive. So get a job, save the money, buy the car, and be happy.
