What if you discovered as you got into some body's vehicle that the inside door handles were missing?
Maybe you hitched a ride with somebody, and as you pulled the door shut you realized the inside door handles had been removed and you couldn't open the door to get out. Would you panic? Start kicking at the window? Ask what's going on, pull out your mace, or knife, or what?

If the person was actually trying to trap you, they would disable the handles without removing them. (If the handles were missing, you might notice before you closed the door, and run away. To prevent that, the person would disconnect them, but not remove them.) The person would only remove them if the person was just trying to scare you.

I would go for the rear window, not the side as most of these are designed to pop out and or break into beads. The side windows are often two layers of glass with a plastic film in the and not designed for ease of exit. Rule one, don't panic! Also look for a working window crank, maybe the window could be rolled down enough to reach the out side handle.
On most cars there is a safety device that makes operation of rear doors from the inside child proof. The driver may have small children who they transport and set it up for them.
The only cars that come with disabled rear door latches are cop cars, maybe the driver is a undercover cop, so drawing a knife or mace on them might prove to be a bad idea.
The best solution, don't hitch hike.

If it was some kind of physcho then i wouldnt draw attention to the fact i realised, or thought it was an issue that they were missing, i would be like damn i think i dropped something and lean out and run, but if i shut the door already i would say that and be like woops no door handle ha? my car is so bad too, how do i get out to pick it up? and if all failed i would go crazy kicking and stuff :)
p.s this is such a good question :)

Oh, dude..
Death Proof. Rose McGowan scenes. If that happens, you're pretty much done for.. Check for door handles before you close the door. If there aren't any, run! Especially if you're hitching a ride and don't know the person.

Oddly enough I look at that thing AS I'm closing the door, it's usually hard to miss. So I wouldn't close the door and would just get out. It's not safe, for me or as a vehicle.

I'd notice that before the door was closed and I'd jump out. Whenever you enter anything you should always check for viable exits.
