Hello, do you mean Yucatan the state or the peninsula? :)
I live in the Yucatan (state) so here are my 2 cents.
This state has the lowest salaries of the country in general, yet the cost of living is very equal. I've had foreign friends have a nice home with very little money. They love to see how much they can pay with so little. Same with health care. Food can be very affordable.
I don't know how much money you can bring but let's say you can get a house (which is cheaper that an apartment) for 1500-2000 pesos. Or you get an apartment equipped with Internet, etc. 2500-3500 aprox (but might include bills). You know what I mean? I have friends live on nothing and there are tons who do so, so don't worry much about surviving.
Working under the table? hehe if a Mexican would say that ab doing so in US here on Yahoo answers he would get ripped apart lol. Don't worry, you will find many places where you will be able to do so, especially call centers that hire foreign people without visas (or they eventually get you one like happened with a friend of mine).
This place is one of the safest of the whole country (unless you head towards Cancun) so that's not an issue. What you should take care of is the amount of tropical diseases out there. For example, dengue fever which is transmitted by mosquitoes. Do everything to keep them away with citronella, etc.
I do hope you live roaches, especially huge, flying ones.

Well first off it's great you're going to Mexico. Don't listen to people who tell you that you will be shot and killed, because that is not true. Mexico has changed alot over the years and is one of the biggest economies in the world. As far as how much money you need to take, you can check here to see a currency converter and it will tell you: http://finance.yahoo.com/currency-converter/?a=1&s...
It is better to live in Mexico with a source of stable money, but if you plan on working there, remember Mexico jobs aren't like in the U.S. Some jobs pay by the day instead of by the hour like in the U.S. If I were you, I would build a house over there because you don't pay mortgage in Mexico and if you pay rent, it could accumulate and just turn into problems. Building a house with dollars is a safer bet. You should save a lot of money of course because many people say that things in Mexico are cheap, but truly its almost equivalent to if you were buying a product in the U.S.
good luck in Mexico! Trust me, Mexico has gotten safer for travelers.

The first thing to do , is to loose your "under the table" attitude, you do not want to have to stay at a Mexican jail, ever. The essential is to be fluent in Spanish, its a must in provincial towns such as Merida. Getting a job will be very hard if you have no degree or skills, even with the proper immigration permits.
