My speakers aren't working, can you give me reasons they couldn't be working?

My speakers were just working 45 minutes ago and I haven't changed any settings or anything. I went to "sound" in the control panel and it said my laptop speakers were connected and functioning properly... but obviously there are not. What do you think is going on?

    Check to see if the mute function has been activated.
