Ape Hangers or Drag Bars?

I have a 2003 Harley Davidson Softail Standard anniversary edition and I want to change out the handlebars. Im not sure if I want to go with ape hangers, which i like, or drag bars that are nice too. Which type should I get?

P.S. I want to be comfortble when I ride

Comfort? Then leave 'em the heck alone. Styling change? Bars aren't going to make it stand out from the thousands of same cyckles out there. The ubiquitous Milwaukee tractor can be outfitted with bars from a site below. Yawn.

Ape hangers are pretty stupid, and they wear out your forearms pretty quick from having to hang up there against the wind at highway speed. Also, dangerous and difficult to steer the bike. Drag bars are better in my opinion but still not made for comfort, however I have taken long rides on my bike with drag bars and didn't find it too challenging. If you have the right body size, and the right bike, leaning forward like that can actually be quite comfortable. That, and I am young, so my back doesn't really cramp up after a long day. Also, I found that the drag bars make steering a little more responsive on my bike (1981 GS850), and I liked that over the stock bars.

The ape bars will look better than the drag bars. For comfort, that's a personal thing. Only you know what is comfortable. Go to a Harley dealer. They have the different bars and bikes with them on, see which fits your definition of comfortable.

Neither of those options were meant for comfort. Between the two choices go for the drag bars. Ape Hangers are the most stupid looking things ever invented.

If you want to be comfortable while you ride, then keep the OEM bars. Ape hangars are not safe, and drag bars put you into a position where you have to lean forward like a rider on a crotch rocket.

While I like the look of drag bars, the bars will not be comfortable for long rides. Bars force you to lean forward too much. Ape hangers are just stupid. Sorry to be blunt but they are just stupid. They make it harder for you to control the bike.

    Good Luck

You have got to determine which of the two suits you best. I would venture to say that those that are bashing ape hangers have either never rode with them or never rode with them enough to get the feel for them. I have rode over 60,000 miles with apes and have never had a problem. Apes are like anything else though, it will take a little getting used to, but once that happens you will wonder why you didnt get them earlier!

See if you can borrow another bike that has these bars and see for yourself.

Different people have different ideas of comfort.

It's the fact that there is such a variety of riders and machines that brings us all together.

One thing that looks dumber than a guy riding down the road with his hands straight up over his head is a guy who looks like he is reaching for his toes in the middle of a sit-up. Face it, you aren't going to be comfortable with all that vibration and noise, and you are never going to look cool riding the most common bike on the road.
