My transmission does not shift gears?

Has anyone ever heard of this and what it could be and is this a quick fix or an expensive one? My car has been having problems in the past. I would start it, but after putting it in drive, it would be stuck in say 1st or 2nd gear and wouldn't shift higher because it was cold. I started warming it up for 2 to 3 minutes before putting it in drive and it was fine afterwards. The transmission fluid is dirty, but when I told my mechanic about this problem he suggested that changing the transmission fluid would make it worse because air would get in and it would do all kinds of weird things because he believed the transmission was bad. Now today, the car started fine, but the transmission doesn't shift. The gear shift will move and the lights come on showing that it is moving to P R N D and so forth, but every gear except for park is like being in neutral. For instance, you need to put the car in neutral to push it. This car can be put into reverse, neutral, drive, drive 2nd, drive low and it can be pushed just like neutral. The only difference is park. When placed in park, it is in park. The car does not move. I feel like this is going to be an expensive transmission problem, but any mechanics out there know what this could be? This is a 1989 Toyota Cressida. There was only one model make which is the 6 cylinder. The transmission is automatic. What could possibly be the problem? Also, if it is expensive to repair, does anyone know of a quick fix that can get it working temporarily for at least a little while longer?

Update:

The transmission fluid has always been full, but it is brown. I have not driven too many miles on it; I put 4000 miles on it since I've had it. I've only had the car about 2 1/2 years and never changed the transmission fluid in all that time. I only drive it to and from work which is about 3.25 miles one way.

Update 2:

Although too old to be in KBB, I did find the low retail value at www.nadaguides.com to be at $1925. I believe it to be in fair condition.

I agree with Matt... real men drive stick shifts. Sell your car and get a stick shift! More reliable, more fun, cheaper to maintain, cheaper to repair.

If you have a manual transmission, the lubricant level has nothing to do with the studder. If you are experiencing a delay in engine rev, and your attempting to release the clutch, your going to get studder because the RPM's are too low. You need to find out why the engine rev's too slowly. Its most likely what is causing the Check Engine light. If you have an automatic transmission, you must have a dip stick. It will be back near the fire wall and it typically has a red handle as opposed to the yellow or orange handle for the regular engine oil. Its possible with an automatic transmission to get a studder if the automatic transmission fluid is low as the fluid coupling in the torque converter is not getting enough fluid pressure. I'd go after that Check Engine light first and I think the Trans problem will rectify itself once the engine issue is resolved.

First place to look is the "Check Engine" light. You can get the code read at most parts stores and find out where to look for the problem. Or I just found out. There is a red cap on the transmission and near it is a small bolt that you take out when the transmission is warmed and running. Transmission fluid should leak out and if it doesn't you introduce fluid into the hole covered by the red cap until it seeps out the bolt hole. Put bolt and cover back on and you should be good to go. If you have to add any, you have a leak.

Get a complete transmission flush. Fluids, gasket, filter and have them flush your tranny. looking at about 80$ for it all. As for the mechanic saying that it will make it worse, sounds like a shady mechanic trying to charge you for a transmission rebuilt kit.

the transmission filter is clogged up. it won,t hurt it 1 bit to change the fluid and filter. all you need is about 6 or 7 quarts of fluid, a pan gasket and a filter. also if you have a modulator valve it could be bad too but it sounds like the filter.

Is the linkage/cable hooked up? It could be the manual valve in the valve body. whats an 89 cressida worth? I checked kelley blue book it doesn't go back that far, but a 1991 cressida in fair condition is only worth $550. on a trade in. Be careful on what you spend

  • i dont believe that trans uses a modulator but i could be wrong. the pan only holds about 2.5-3 qts. if you have not kept up on the routine services on that thing since the beginning, do not drop the fluid now, it would only get worse. i have to ask if you have checked the fluid level since this started happening. the lack of hydraulic pressure would effect all gears.
