DRS - good or bad for F1?

Lets face it, while the FIA got DRS good in China and Malaysia, in Turkey it looked as if I was watching a Mario Kart race, not a Formula 1 race. The extra speed DRS gives is very noticeable. What are your views on it? Do you think it should stay, as it has made racing better? Or do you see it as just a gimmick, not real racing, which should go? Or would you change the rules regarding DRS?

It is a gimmick and doesn't belong in F1 if F1 is to be considered as a sport. The DRS effectively makes being ahead an offense and has to live with the drag penalty. If all sporting events are like this:

    1) The goalkeeper of the leading team has to be blindfolded if the goal difference is just 1 (soccer, hockey etc)

    2) In tennis, you get three serves if you are trailing by just one point.

    3) In athletics you can take 1 mg of anabolic steroids if you are not as good as the others in an event.

Overtaking should be done by merit, not by imposing a handicap on the leader or by allowing an otherwise illegal operation in the car. Bernie's idea of shortcuts in the circuit is a tad better than DRS.

Well we may have had 4 races so far but it is still new technology. Like you says, the DRS was good in China and Malaysia but it looked too easy in Turkey. I remember Mark Webber saying in Turkey that he was shaping up Alonso and normally that would be a challenge but he just breezed past and he got no satisfaction from it. I would say that it can't be at all races like monaco because I feel that though they could have the activation zone through the tunnel, it would be uneffective as the straight is too short. Also, it can't get used at Monza in Italy as the cars have the least downforce at Monza than any other track and the rear wings are effectively flat (like in the pic below

    http://paddocktalk.com/news/html/modules/ew_filema... )

so it would be pointless there. I think that if I was going to change any rules then I would shorten the activation zones because the DRS was ment to get cars to be side by side with each other and not passing them half way down the straight. I'd maybe make it so that when the cars are side by side, the DRS has to be swithed off and then there is still the challenge of overtaking. Like Murray Walker said, "Catching up is one thing, passing is quite another".

My feelings have gone from dislike to indifference or acceptance. I think the idea is OK so long as it's properly balanced. The car behind has an inherent disadvantage. If the the system puts the 2 cars on equal ground, I'm OK with the concept. Or that's how I justify it in my mind. But if overtaking becomes too easy, I don't like it. And if it doesn't help, then it's just unnecessary.

Well on a Track the formula 1 car would definitely win because the road conditions are controlled. On the street as in the F&F movies depending on the obstacles that are faced anyone can win but if there are no obstacles and the formula 1 tyres are heated to allow grip, then the formula 1 car will win easily every single time.

I think it is fantastic finally the faster car and better driver can get ahead and give some real racing - no more trulli trains
