I accidentally put diesel fuel in my gas tank car and drove it about 10 minutes, how much is the damage?
Earlier i put about half tank full of diesel fuel in my gas tank car and drove it fine for about ten minutes to the movies. After the movie, my car wouldn't start and had it towed back home. Mainly bc im not insured to the car and it's my aunt's car. The tow truck guy said that the damage should be about 10,000$. Is that true? bc if it is, im screwed.

Yeah i agree with earlier post, the tow truck driver has no idea what he is talking about. Don't be too worried, I have had cars into my shop with this situation before. Generally we have gotten away with removing gas tank, and fully cleaning it out, as well as filter and possibly the pickup screen. The fuel lines will have to be fully bled. Even after all this there will still be a small about of diesel in your fuel system, and every once in a while you may feel a bit of a stutter, or a missfired cylinder. This is because tiny little bits of leftover diesel are being sucked into your engine. And you engine light will constantly come on. We had a little toyota yaris do this, and it took a thorough cleaning, bleeding and filter changes. But even after that it took around 6 months for the car to be driven to get all the tiny little droplets or diesel out of the tank and burnt up.
Don't be too worried, it will cost a couple days at the shop, a few dollars and a bit of explaining to your aunt, but its true - accidents happen.

The tow truck guy is a moron. It's unlikely you've done any damage at all. All that's likely needed is for the fuel and fuel system to be drained and cleaned out (including replacing the fuel filter), the plugs cleaned, and refilled with fresh gas. Then it should run, though it might smoke a bit to start with. Costs a few hundred.
If you'd done it the other way round, put that amount of gas in a diesel car, it might indeed have caused costly damage.

First how did you manage to put nozzle in tank,it's larger and. not supposed to fit unleaded. But don't panic fairly easy fix. Tow to reputable or Dealers shop. Fuel tank will have to come off and emptied,if it doesn't have drain plug, fuel filter replaced and if fuel injected, fuel rail will need bleeding out. That should be it. Depending on what you're driving will affect cost. Doubt over$500.00 max. If had been diesel engine you put gas in then it's the big bucks. Seen it happen many times. Hope Auntie not too upset accidents happen. So don't get panties in a wad.

Hi,
I have 2012 nissan altima 2.5 SL [I bought as brand new], I was driving from NJ to Atlanta, GA. I accidentally put 5 gallons of diesel in the car and later i realized it is diesel, I stopped immediately filling it. The odometer reading was 16,000 Miles. I called few of my friends and brothers. They suggested to not drive and take it to a shop by towing but it was Saturday and no dealers are open to drain the tank. But, one of my brother said dilute it by filling with gas completely. So, I filled 13.5 gallons of gas. [1.5 Gallongs (gas already in car)+5 Gallongs(diesel)+13.5 Gallons(gas) = 20 Gallons (Total)]. I drove and emptied the tank and reached Atlanta. Then filled with premium gas [5 gallons ] and drove it. Then I added fuel injector cleaner and filled the tank and emptied in 5 days. Then, I showed my car to the dealer and asked him to inspect during an oil change. He inspected the engine and said every thing is ok and normal. It was still under warrenty. Now, my car odo meter reading is 45,000 miles. Still drives like new and no issues at all. I use fuel injectors cleaner for every 3000 miles and oil change for every 4000 miles (standard conventional oil). When I drive my car on highway I get at-least 30mpg. Be careful while filling gas. One more thing is, the car gas tank will not fit with diesel tank nozzle.

The easiest way to deal with that would be to fill your tank with the correct gas. That should dilute the diesel enough that you'll be able to burn it off without any ill effects. Fill your tank with regular gas ASAP, if you don't, your Jeep may stop running and you could be stranded somewhere.

actually just did this myself lol. you're going to have to drop your fuel tank and empty it. clean it out with brake cleaner, and change your fuel filter. but no real damage should have occurred. It'll take forever to start the first time after putting it all back together again, and it'll smoke like an old man for a while. At most it could have damaged one of your injectors.

ears whadaya gadda do ! get most of what is in it out ! siphon usually works good. then ! add back to it with real gas. its no worse than weed eater Fuel mix. it may smoke some for the first few tanks but it will run good. diesel is just not as refined as gas. has more oil init.

drain the tank ,remove fuel line and pump fuel through, refill with petrol and cross fingers

that fuel can damage the emission system in that car. you should have the fuel system drained, flushed and refilled.
